Mr. Tsi-an Hsia, conversant with Chinese and western learning, has leftremarkable writings and translations. A Selection of American Essays includesrepresentative works of American writers throughout the18thand19thcentury. Itstranslated version by Tsi-an Hsia produces a romantic charm against its originalappeal. An aesthetic aftertaste lingers upon reading the translation, which owes toTsi-an Hsia’s extraordinary bilingual competence and cross-cultural understanding.This thesis owns two purposes. One is to present Tsi-an Hsia’s style oftranslated prose; the other is to evaluate the significance of Tsi-an Hsia’s translationstyle and achievement on literature translation in China. Distinct from the existingrelevant studies, it conducts an in-depth and systematic analysis of Tsi-an Hsia’sstyle of translated prose. It adopts contrastive, quantitative and qualitative analysis,with Liu Miqing’s theory of Stylistic Markers System as theoretic base, carrying outan integrated research upon Tsi-an Hsia’s translating practices.Meanwhile, this thesis provides certain revelation. Firstly, translation theory andpractice are indispensable in the development of translatology, for they complementeach other. Secondly, the high quality of Tsi-an Hsia’s translated prose stems from asuperiority of original works, a strong liking for the original, and a drive ofacademic research. Thirdly, a good translator devoted to literature translation ideallyshould be proficient in writing. In this way, his translation is expressive both inoriginal style and meaning. Finally, based on this thesis, further research on Tsi-anHsia’s other translations can be carried out in similarly integrated approach.
