The social and economic transition of the Lintin Ocean area during China's Ming and Qing dynasties presents, in fact, the process of fighting and mingling between China's modern ocean civilization and traditional inland civilization, with the former absorbing the latter and finally prevailing. Doing research on this process, this thesis is intended to provide a angle -the angle of the social and economic history of the ocean, for a better understanding as to how the social economic activities of different population groups living in the Lintin Ocean area during the Ming and Qing dynasties really contributed to the society development of China.This thesis consists of the introduction, five chapters of the main text and the conclusion. The Introduction gives a recapitulative review of the academic researches done on the social and economic history of the ocean; discusses about its value for reference and its limitations; and then presents the research methods and the thread of this thesis; finally provides the related historical materials employed.The main text is divided into five chapters. Chapter One discusses about the Lintin Ocean area on changes of geographical environments before the Ming dynasty and evolvement of administrative divisions during different historic periods .Chapter Two analyses the demographic structure of the Lintin Ocean area according to the size and movement of population during the Ming and Qing dynasties; describes people's ocean-developing activities in their agricultural commercialization and business generalization process. Chapter Three discusses the relationship between the coastal population and the development of the ocean economy in the Lintin Ocean area in the Ming and Qing dynasties.The discussion covers the sea control of the priate group and the influence of Damin group on the development of agriculture , commerce and fishery in this area.Chapter Four discusses about the relationship between westerners and changes of ocean social economy in the Lintin Ocean area during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with the analysis of westerners' activities and the consequent conceptional change of local official and populace on production and livelihood as the focus.Chapter V discusses about the relationship between sea frontier fortifying and ocean economy developing in the Lintin Ocean area in the Ming and Qing dynasties. It includes the expanding oceanic territory by the garrison, the garrison's smuggling activities and the evolvement of ship building industry in multivariant coast defense situation, etc.The Conclusion overviews the roles played by different local groups in the social and economic vicissitudes of the Lintin Ocean area in the Ming and Qing dynasties.It clarifies the relationship between the ocean culture of the Lintin Ocean area and the inland culture.
