Literature is an art of language, so language is supposed to be the basis and key point in literature research. Chinese modern literature is precisely based on a linguistic revolution, and it is the evolution of language from Ancient Chinese to Modern Chinese that leads to the variation of literature from Ancient literature to Modern literature. Chinese literature is a kind of literature concerning Chinese, and modern Chinese poetry is a kind of poetry concerning Modern Chinese, which is a mixture of ancient vernacular, Europeanized Chinese, classical Chinese and even dialect. All these four factors contribute to the formation of characteristics of modern Chinese poetry respectively. It is necessary to analyze these ingredients and how they influence on modern Chinese poetry from a linguistic viewpoint, and it will also be positive to construct the language of modern Chinese poetry.Vernacular is the core of modern Chinese. The Vernacular Campaign in May 4th Movement was not only a literature revolution, but a linguistic revolution. In this campaign, the features of Chinese character were neglected and Chinese language was once on the verge of phonocentrism. The different nature of Chinese as a communication tool, a thought noumenon and a poetic language was confused, and the limit of colloquial language, written language and poetic language was also called off. The deviation of this linguistic understanding resulted in the fact that the poetic nature including poetic type, language and passion was treated without proper respect. The formation of modern Chinese was related to Europeanization, and excessive Europeanization, however, not only impacted on the inner and external form of Chinese poetry, but changed the traditional poetic taste by making Chinese be an accurate, grammatical and logical language abiding by the western linguistic laws. Classical Chinese is the root of Chinese language and reflects the features of Chinese characters, which exist in the form of poetic image and non-linear, so the use of antithesis and image is very popular in Chinese poetry. Chinese charater is also an important factor of modern Chinese, and it may be helpful in poem-writing. Oral language is a phone-typed language which is close to spoken language and usually shows the character-typed traits of itself. Valuing the phone but devaluing the charater will definitely lead to such poetic characteristics as anti-image and narrativeness and mislead colloquial poetry to the poems full of nonsense, obscenities, and foul smell. Vernacular Campaign was essetially a"de-charactered"movement, and the lack of Chinese characters contributed to the coarseness of Chinese literature. Only by taking Chinese-typed peculiarites seriously and learning something from the tradition can modern Chinese poetry develop towards a proper direction.
