Yuefu Miscellany Study

Yuefuzalu, written by Duan Anjie, is one of the musical works of the Tang dynasty,. It records the construction of Yuefu and the development of music and dance in the Tang dynasty , especially in the middle and late Tang dynasty. Duan Anjie was born during the period of emperor Wenzong, and died when the Tang dynasty ended . Dayi is his courtesy name, He once held several government posts as Libulangzhong, Guozisiye, Yiwangfu.Pipalu is a part of Duan Anjie's Yuefuzalu, which was taken from it ,edited and published by people in the Song dynasty. Yuefuzalu was written in the Qianning perioed of emperor Zhaozong, There have always been some different versions of Yuefuzalu in circulation. The earliest version of Yuefuzalu we know about today is the book collected by Zhao Xibian of the Song dynasty .The earliest version of Yuefuzalu that still exists today is the Leishuo version .At present there are three versions of Yuefuzalu held in Jingjiatang in Tokyo, Janpan. And possibly others elsewhere abroad which are currently unknown to us.There are many kinds of recording errors in the versions of Yuefuzalu that need revision.Some name of Tang's yuebu, such as Yayuebu,Hubu,Gujiabu,were written about firstly and only in Yuefuzalu, However what is written differs from other relevant documents of the same time. Sanyue was popular in the Middle and Late Tang dynasty. Gewuxi,Huajixi and other zaji are three main kinds of Sanyue. Hubu is a new kind of popular music during Mid-Tang to Five Dynasties and is different from the Hu music in the Tang dynasty. It became a kind of Yuebu of Tang dynasty later than other kinds of music, and it is the result of the development of XiliangyueThis paper investigates more than eighty musicians recorded in Yuefuzalu from different aspects: the source,the gender,the life and the retirement of the musicians. It shows that the mumber of male is higher than that of female. The musicians who came from Xiyu region are in fact only the minority of the musicians from the Tang dynasty.They mainly played as musical instrumental players focusing on Pipa or Paiyou performance.on the exchanging and transmission of music cultrue among China and other countries, Biao country contributing its music is a very important event at that time. Howerve, The musical instruments of Gaoliji recorded in Xintangshu Liyuezhi is greatly different from that recorded in Tangliudian, Tongdian and Jiutangshu yinyuezhi. On the contrary, The musical instruments of Gaoliji recorded in Xintangshu Liyuezhi is similar or even the same to the musical instruments of Biao which recorded in xintagnshu namanzhuan. Whatsmore,the records about the musical instruments of Gaoliji in Xintangshu Liyuezhi are consistent with the records about the musical instruments of Biao in Yuefuzalu in many aspects such as,word order,writing style.This paper considers that the writer of Xintangshu Liyuezhi, made a mistake by cnfusing the musical instruments of Biao with that of Gaoliji. hence writing about the musical instruments of Biao in the part about Gaoliji in Xintangshu Liyuezhi.
