This dissertation is a comprehensive and deep research of Yu Chang's exegeses on ChunQiu Sizhuan(《春秋》四傳)in Jiaoshu(《校書》).Yu's exegeses are studied from eight aspects:explaining characters and words, analyzing sentences and phrases, investigating grammar, illustrating figures of speech, clarifying main ideas and styles, examining decrees and regulations, supplementing historical facts, reconstructing texts; and Yu's methods of exegeses--"ascertaining meaning of words by making use of parallel structures", "finding meanings by comparing different characters for the same texts", "seeking meanings through pronunciations of characters", "expounding meanings in the context of the original text" and "searching meanings by collecting old annotations from classics"-- are analyzed. In practice Yu shows the characteristics of his own exegesis characteristics:being able to make new findings, paying attention to contemporary scholars'thoughts, and holding truth even confronting his teachers. Compared with former or contemporary exegetic experts, Yu's exegeses puts more emphasis on supplementing historical facts and explaining words'meanings. Being familiar with names of things and regulations, he highly values the important role they play in exegetics. But for all kinds of reasons, subjective and objective, Yu's exegetic conclusions are often "having truths and mistakes in the same annotation", and sometimes "with over research and forced interpretation for loving to create new ideas". By the analysis of specific examples, this dissertation shows the importance of Yu's achievements of exegeses in collation of ancient books and compilation of dictionaries and its utilization by later generations. The punctuation mistakes of related contents in Xiangcao jiaoshu(《香草校書》)of Zhonghua Shuju edition are pointed out one by one in the plus part, which can be a reference for further collation of Yu Chang's works in the future.
