Kristeva is a famous French literary theorist and semiolgist. Her name is closely related with inter-textualiy, an important term popularly used in contemporary literary criticism. Kristeva has not only initiated the theory of inter-textuality, but also insists on an understanding of text in the context of the whole historical and social background. In fact, Kristeva proposes that the society and history is a big text, and all its components are interrelated. Besides inter-textuality, Kristeva also invents other terms like the semiotic, the symbolic and the chora, subject in process, etc. Currently, the academic circle focuses only on Kristeva's theory of inter-textuality or other concepts, which may result in a partial understanding of her theories as well as a negligence of a new perceptive and method of understanding and analyzing the world via her theory of semi-analysis.In order to clarify the development of Kristeva's theory of semi-analysis, and to explore and reveal the relationship between her main concepts, theories and semi-analysis, this dissertation, through such methods as comparative study, close reading, induction and deduction, demonstrates that her theoretical system consists of several related parts. Such methods meet the requirements of Kristeva's semi-analysis study, i.e. changes in the structure and structures in the changes. Kristeva emphasizes the changes of the structure, and the relationship among different structures. The dissertation manages to abide by her theory in dividing the semi-analysis into several parts that are co-related with each other like intertexts. The dissertation consists of the following parts. In the introduction, the central argument and the study purpose are put forward on the base of an overview of the studies on Kristeva in China and other countries. It also points out that Kristeva's special life experiences with an immigrant and cultural background have exerted considerable influence upon the establishment of her theories. The first chapter illustrates that the semi-analysis, as a theory of post-structualism, is a natural product of the development of semiotics, which corresponds to the historical law. In the second chapter, the source theories of semi-analysis and its relationship with other theories are examined, mainly from the perspectives of linguistics, literary theories and psycho-analytic theories. In the following three chapters, three components of the semi-analysis are discussed, namely the semiotic and the symbolic, text and textuality, and the subject in process, which build up the theoretical world of semi-analysis. The dissertation provides a better understanding of Kristeva's semi-analysis by analyzing such concepts as the semiotic and the symbolic, geno-text and phono-text, etc. In the sixth chapter, Kristeva's semi-analysis is explained through its connection with other theories and social phenomena. Based on a close study of the relationship between Kristeva's semi-analysis and feminism, it is revealed that Kristeva makes a special contribution to the study of feminism. The dissertation may contribute to a better understanding of the phenomena of the diversified modern society. The semi-analysis accelerates the development of post-structuralist semiotics, as well as illustrates the characteristics of the post-modern society. The dissertation concludes that semi-analysis is the product of the development of the diversified culture in the modern society.Through analyzing semi-analysis, the dissertation may contribute to an easier and better understanding of Kristeva's theories. Kristeva's theoretical system is more reasonable because she sees the text as her study object. In fact, she prefers to use literary texts to illustrate her complex theory, which makes her semiotic study closely related with literary study. This is the reason behind the choice of this subject as the research topic of this dissertation.
