Fu gu bian by Zhang you in Song Dynasty, which is a special philology book, aims at standardizing the Chinese Characters. Based on previous studies, the dissertation conducts a more systematic study on it.Through tracing its different editions and versions from Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, the dissertation thinks that fine transcript transcribed the block-printed edition of Song Dynasty is the most precious and best version for study and calligraphy because it preserves original conditions of the block-printed edition of Song Dynasty and its writing is standard, neat and smart; the block-printed edition of Yuan Dynasty with fewer errors is best version for researching variants of Shuo wen and annotated text of Fu gu bian; and the lithographic edition of Fu gu bian is a special philology book by anonym in the late Yuan and early Qing Dynasty.The fine transcript transcribed the block-printed edition of Song Dynasty is the most common version but has many mistakes in it. Through referring the different versions from Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties the dissertation collates it.Fu gu bian standardizing the Characters is based on Shuo wen. There are some the differences in writing, meaning and pronunciation. According to the Characters of unearthed objects and the literature handed down for generations, the dissertation proves that some bodies of Xiaozhuan are more ancient and closer to the original conditions of Zhuanwen in Qing and Han Dynasties than Shuo wen's. Through comparing variants the dissertation uses Fu gu bian to rectify the errors in Shuo wen of the block-printed edition by Chen changzhi. Through comparing their fanqies the dissertation finds that Fu gu bian not only reflects the pronunciation in Song Dynasty but also saves some dialects.Fu gu bian takes the writing of Shuo wen as the standard, and excludes folk-characters. Through the study of the different variants of Chinese Characters, the dissertation aims to inspect their condition of inheritance and the Zhang you's thought of standardization of the Characters.In the appendix Zhang you put forward the concept of the disyllabic Chinese words for the first time. Through the analysis on the usage of the two syllables of disyllabic Chinese words, the dissertation concludes that Zhang you's concept of the disyllabic Chinese words is different from that of our time.Through the analysis on the meanings of Chinese characters, the dissertation draws such a conclusion that associated meaning is one of the causes why the Chinese characters which are similar in "writing and pronunciation" and "pronunciation" are confused easily.During the cause of discriminating the writing, meaning and pronunciation, Fu gu bian penetrates the thought which is restoring the old but not violating the present while it restores Shuo wen.
