Modernity refers to the essential state of the modern society. It is reflected in many aspects like social thoughts, politics, economy, science and technology. Ever since human history entered the stage of modern society, trauma began to influence the existence of human being unprecedentedly and enormously. There isn't a modern historical work that bypasses trauma, for it is an efficient means for people to think about violence, persecution and cultural ethics. Owning to its own features, literature establishes the relationship with trauma at the very beginning, and modern society provides a better opportunity for trauma writing. To narrate the contemporary trauma immersed in the context of modernity becomes the inevitable choice of writers.Cross-cultural writers refer to those with two or more than two cultural backgrounds. They are more likely to come into contact with multiplied traumatic experience, which determines the depth and modern senses of their work. They are simultaneously carriers and disseminators of multiplied cultures. In one word, the cultural feature in them is cultural hybrid. They are shaped by multi-cultures and also shape the modern taste of multi-cultures by their art.My research is focused on four cross-cultural writers: English Writer Doris Lessing, Australian writer Patrick White, South African writer J.M. Coetzee and English writer V.S.Naipaul. By analyzing their representative novels, I elucidate how cross-cultural writers narrate, interpret and reflect trauma.Cross-cultural writers walk into the world of trauma because of their own multiplied cultural backgrounds. The ways they approach trauma determines their literary creations of traumatic contents. Lessing's African background makes her works echo the sound of self-searching; White's trauma arises from his puzzlement in the disenchanted world; Coetzee's trauma is closely related to the historical reality of South Africa; Naipaul's traumatic experience is connected with his immigration experiencesTrauma writing is concerned with the following categories: searching for belief; reflecting on civilization; doubting power discourse; giving attention to the disastrous world; investigating into the problem of alienation and the loss of identity.Cross-cultural writers describe trauma, analyze it and try to find out ways to cure it. The hardest way of ending the pain of trauma is to sacrifice one's life, which is a tragic choice. Although tragedy takes away the most valuable things from life, it also gives us the most significant inspirations. Quitting subject is also a way to overcome the impact of trauma, for giving up one's ego means man can get back his lost world. And the power of love is always the best medicine for trauma. In modern society, man can also find the truth of life and significance of belief in his daily life. Another way of treating trauma is to seek deliverance from sin, by which, man can get his heart purified and problems solved. Cross-cultural writers also come to terms with the world and gain a full understanding of our life by probing into the theme of death.Writers pay attention to the problems that accompany the modern society, such as belief, man's mental health problems, alienation, loss of identity etc. Under the pen of the cross-cultural writers, trauma is like a multi-edged mirror, which reflects our age and its essence from different angles .
