This dissertation is a study on the history of Xi Jin poetic criticism. The criticism of Xi Jin poetry, starts from Xi Jin and ends in Qing Dynasty, lasts a long time and has a lot of works. And these works contain rich materials of criticism, which are summarized by the author into five aspects: the criticism on the general characteristics of Xi Jin poetry; on Xi Jin poets; on Xi Jin poetry; on the theories of Xi Jin poets; criticism of Xi Jin literary criticism, and on the criticism of earlier generations. This dissertation is composed of the introduction and five chapters. The introduction deals with some problems closely related to the dissertation, such as the topic sources, research contents and significance, the analysis of the topic, analytical procedures and methods, and research fruits and tendencies. The main contents consist of five chapters. The first four chapters analyze the history of Xi Jin poetic criticism. The last chapter is a summary on this critical history. The history of Xi Jin poetic criticism is divided into several periods, namely, the period of Xi Jin and Dong Jin; of Tang , Song, and Yuan Dynasties; of Ming and Qing Dynasties. The criticism on each period falls into one chapter. In each chapter, the critical works are first given as examples and then are analyzed. The important works in each period are further discussed and a summary is given to each chapter.Chapter one deals with the Xi Jin and Dong Jin poetic criticism. Xi Jin and Dong Jin dynasties are the time that becomes the origin and the foundation of poetic criticism, and has not abundant critical works and materials.Chapter two analyzes the criticism in Nan Dynasty. Nan Dynasty is believed to be an important time in the history of Xi Jin poetic criticism and is called a"high"period. It is characterized with rich critical materials, works and profound criticism. The dissertation believes that Xi Jin poetry as an art pattern is founded in the criticism of this period, and it has much influence on the later poetic criticism. Chapter three discusses the poetic criticism in Tang, Song and Yuan Dynasties. In contrast with the poetic criticism in Nan Dynasty, the poetic criticism in this period is rich in materials but poor in contents, which is summarized as"silent"characteristics of the three dynasties criticism. Furthermore, in the poetic criticism of this period, a negative attitude toward Xi Jin poetry is developed, and the critical model about poets such as Pan Yue and Lu Ji has been established, which is summarized as"turning-point"and generalizes another characteristic of the poetic criticism.Chapter four analyzes the poetic criticism of Ming and Qing Dynasties. To speak in detail, the criticism of this period focuses on two points: one is the criticism on the style of Xi Jin poetry based on the principle of pattern-priority principle of the"Seven Scholars". Under such an atmosphere, Xi Jin poetry is more viewed as negative and later adjusted by Hu Yinglin and Xu Xueyi. The other is the criticism of the schools of"Gong An"and"Jing Ling", as well as Lu Shiyong, which base on the principle of disposition (this part of content is omitted due to many reasons). The criticism on authors and works in Qing Dynasty is abundant, especially in anthologies, with the feature of being general, which is characteristics as"deepening and totality"of the criticism in this period.Chapter five is the summary, which sums up the critical history of Xi Jin poetry. In this chapter, the questions are answered, such as why Xi Jin poetry arouses so much criticism in later times, what characteristics it has, what critical models and critical methods it has. This dissertation is the first study on critical history of Xi Jin poetry. It breaks through the ways of the traditional study on Xi Jin poetry and transforms the synchronous and static study of Xi Jin poetry into the diachronic and dynamic study. This is a new viewpoint, which will improve Xi Jin poetry study. Based on this, I hope I can accomplish the study of the critical and acceptable history of Xi Jin poetry.
