Contemporary Russian Diplomatic Studies

After the Cold War, the international environment has changed significantly, which has exerted profound influence on modern diplomatic practice. Russia was in the middle of this great change, both the internal and international environment had changed, the spread of"New Thinking", the influx of western theories, all these provided a realistic base for Russian Diplomacy. Modern Russian diplomacy is based on the reflective foundation of Soviet Union's diplomatic theory and practice, engage in dialogue with western diplomacy, thus full of academic significance and realistic significance. Scholars at home and abroad paid large amount of attention to modern Russian's diplomatic practice, but few has focused on the theoretic side.Using comparative research method and literature review method, this dissertation begin with the status quo of modern Russian diplomacy, then focused on two representative scholars of modern Russian diplomacy, compared with Soviet Union and western diplomacy, analyzed the current situation and academic character of modern Russian diplomacy, summarized its academic contributions and limitations, then further probe its realistic meanings.Попов.В.Иis the representative of older generation of diplomatic scholars, whileЗонова.Т.Вis the representative ofПопов's younger counterpart, they had different life courses and academic background.Попов.В.Иhad the experience of both as a diplomat and a scholar, whileЗонова.Т.Вnever had the experience of being a diplomat. Thus, their representative literary works are different.Попов.В.И's Modern Diplomacy: Theory and Practice is a more traditional work based on the reflection of Soviet Union's diplomatic practice and theory, also discussed Russia's diplomatic practice and western scholar's work.Зонова.Т.В's The Model of Modern Diplomacy: Origins and Prospective paid much attention to western academic works, more in accordance with academic frontiers. The two books have different merits and disadvantages, represented the status quo of modern Russian diplomacy.The total academic characteristic of modern Russian diplomacy is without systematic school of thought, reflective and say no to ideology, westernization and one-dimensional. The contribution of modern Russian diplomacy lies in the break through of Soviet Union's discourse system, open the curtain of Russian"New Diplomacy". Consider the shortness of its history, it is inevitable to have limitations on the perspective, scope and depth of academic research, at the same time, it has wider space for further study. So that we can say that it will be of significance to modern Russian diplomatic practice and theory construction.
