The subject of the thesis is both traditional and pioneering. It is traditional because moral education has always been the focus of study from time immemorial down to the present day; it is pioneering because no scholar has ever made a comparative study on the modern Chinese and Japanese moral education ideas, which demands much more creativity. In the thesis, not only is the choice of subject original in conception but a breakthrough is also made in the angle and method of research. In terms of angle, the thesis makes a thorough study on the similarities and differences between the modern Chinese and Japanese moral education ideas from such a point of view as they expand and reject the Eastern morals and at the same time absorb and transform Western morals in the process of formation and development. In terms of method, the thesis makes an analysis, a synthesis and a generalization of the modern Chinese and Japanese moral education idea with the combination of historical research and comparative research, macro analysis and microanalysis, general research and specific investigation, integral relation and individual development, revealing the similarities and differences between the modern Chinese and Japanese moral education ideas and the inherent law governing their formation.Focusing on the comparative study of the modern Chinese and Japanese moral education ideas, the author hopes the thesis will provide direct or indirect references in solving the problems of moral education in our country, and help the contemporaries "to examine the past and spur ahead in the future with a stand on the altitude of human civilization."This thesis is composed of six parts.Part one is the introduction, which mainly expounds the significance, the present situation and the tentative plan of the subject. It emphasizes the definition of some basic concepts such as moral idea, etc. Moral education idea is defined as "a reflection of the ideological substance in moral education, a guiding ideology which directs the conduct of moral education, and an idea which reflects the relationship between the subject and the object in moral education."Part two analyzes and compares the moral education in the pre-modern times between China and Japan with a focus on Confucian moral education and Buddhist moral education, which has paved the way for further comparative study of the modern moral education idea in both China and Japan.Part three goes deeply into the rudimentary stage in the development of modern moral education ideas in the two countries. It makes a thorough study on the moral education ideas held by both the Chinese and the Japanese thinkers in "the Westernization Movement", revealing the similarities and differences between "Chinese learning as the base, Western learning for application " and "the Eastern morals combined with the Western learning".Part four is the core of the thesis which discusses the formation and development of the modern moral education ideas in both China and Japan. It makes a profound analysis on the similarities and differences between the moral education ideas held by the Japanese enlightenment thinkers in Meiji Restoration Period(l868-1912), and the Chinese reformist thinkers in late Qing Dynasty(l898-1911), revealing the change and the essence of the modern moral education ideas in the two countries.Part five is also the core of the thesis which compares the programs of both Chinese and Japanese moral education with a focus on the analysis of the change and the essence of the Japanese moral education idea from "Ordinance of the Educational System" to "the Educational Edict", the progress and the essence of the Chinese moral education idea in late Qing Dynasty, and contrasts the similarities and differences between them, revealing the different directions in their development.Part six summarizes the thesis, emphasizing the analysis of the similarities between modern Chinese and Japanese moral education ideas and the reasons as well as the differences between the Japanese "...
