The population aging has imposed formidable challenges for the old age security throughout the world. The reform of the old age security system is one of the most pressing tasks that China is now confronted with owing to the accelerated population aging facilitated by population polices and the ongoing drastic economic transition and social transformation. The inherent drawbacks negatively affect the efficacy of the current old age security system, so the system needs to be re-positioned and re-adjusted. The thesis applies comprehensive analysis to and comparison between the economic theories of the old age security system and points out that the principles and methodologies of Marxist economics should be followed when carrying out research on the old age security in China. The history of the old age security system justifies its inevitability and the basic feature of such system lies in social relief and the sustained normal reproduction of the society. The international disputes on the models governing the reform of the old age security system are rooted in the different values held by relevant parties. From the angle of the social equity, the old age security is a basic good of equity and mainly performs the function of income re-distribution. In China, the previous reform in this area is stranded with the improper value orientation and function positioning, so it needs a radical adjustment in light of the basic national conditions. It is argued that the social equity top the priority in the reform of the old age security system in China in order to boost the harmonious and steady development of the society and economy as regards the population aging, the income distribution, population policies, industrialization and urbanization, market-oriented reform and other actual factors at a special stage of drastic social transformation and economic transition. In this sense, China should rebuild the old age security system. The thesis put forwards the policy suggestions for the reform of the old age security system in China and suggests the framework of the "socially planned, collectively funded" model and presents preliminary discussion over the main contents, implementation difficulties and related reforms of such model. The thesis tentatively carries out theoretical research on the old age security system in China under the guidance of the methodologies of Marxist economics. It comprises seven chapters and 150,000 Chinese characters.
