Under the movement of "Return to Nature" and introspecting of sole economic performance in tradition tourism, "Nature" was accepted as an ideal of tourism. A new form of tourism, saying "Eco-tourism" was born in 80's last century then.Since its emergence, eco-tourism is favored by governments in the world, tourism business and tourists, not only because it brings great chance to the tourism destination, but also it provides tourists with experience to the nature. In addition, it changes revolutionary the idea of tourism, the investment management of tourism and the travel styles, which brings great opportunity to the tourism industry. Ecotourism aids a comprehensive performance of the economic, the social and the environment of the tourism destination. It has become the valid path of the sustainable development and matches with the trend of the modern world. This is the vitality of ecotourism and is why favored by domestic and international experts and scholars.Lots of research work has been done in the field of definition of ecotourism, the programming of ecotourism, the management of ecotourism, the environment of ecotourism etc, but less attention has been paid on ecotourism region. The research on the evaluation and assessment of ecotourism performance has not been reported up to now. Ecotourism region is a space carrier of the ecotourism elements and is the embodiment of the ecotourism resources and the ecotourism products. A prerequisite for healthy development of ecotourism is a healthily development of ecotourism region. Evaluation and assessment on the ecotourism is a simple and practical method to check the performance of economic, social and environment of the ecotourism region. No whole picture definition or explanation of the ecotourism region yet. Usually, people use nature sanctuary scenery famous spot area forest park and natural resources based tourism districts, different types of ecotourism region, instead of the term of ecotourism region. Therefore, what is the ecotourism region? What is the nature of an ecotourism region? What are the types? What's the difference between ecotourism region and the traditional tourism area? What is the structure? How to evaluate the level of coordination amongst economic performance, social performance and environmental one to know the efficient of their operating mechanism? Those are the events should be concerned.In 2001, Chinese government has declared to set up a number of ecotourism demonstration area in the next 5 years, which is brought into "the ten-five state tourism developing plan". Western native tourism is one of the state strategies for the western developing. The research on evaluation and assessment of the performance of ecotourism will guide the development of state ecotourism demonstration area and of the western native tourism. It is also a necessary technical for in tourism policy decision, and for sustainable development of economical benefits, social andenvironmental.Therefore, it is important to conduct the research on the nature of an ecotourism region, its performance, the evaluation and assessment system, which fits the blank in ecotourism field and the outcome will enrich and benefits the practice and theory of ecotourism.We take Lonhsheng, a minority autonomy region in Guangxi province as a case study.Longsheng is rich in tourism resources, such as a state level ecological demonstration county, has national nature reserve-Longsheng Huaping natural reserve, the national forest park-Longsheng hot spring forest park> province level agricultural ecotourism area-Longsheng terraced fields.
