The 21st Century is called an era of biotechnology. Biotechnology will be one of the most important developing powers of world trade in this century. The dissertation is regarding international regulations on transnational trade involving genetically modified organisms (GMOs) .The first part introduces a background of international trade involving GMOs, including contents and concepts of technology and GMOs, commercializing of the products and safety concern with them.The second part regards problems the products having in the global as well as some important international agreements, i.e. relations between trade barriers and regulations of the World Trade Organization (WTO) , and relations between trade limitations and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as well as the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB).The third part includes attitudes and regulations of the US, EU and China towards GMOs. Upon comparison, the dissertation discusses about China's safety policy and regulations of the products and points out current problems.The last part introduces an undecided trade dispute, European Communities- Measures Affecting the Approval and Marketing of Biotech Products, WTO Doc WT/DS291/23 (2003). Moreover, the dissertation analyzes the legislation on biosafety in China, including basic elements and structure of legislation, product labeling and import measures concerning GMOs.
