Since the reform and opening up, coastal metropolises in China, which are the polarization development region in this process, form converging place of productive factors such as labor force, capital, technology and information due to huge population migration and floating and fast urbanization. Thus, the phenomenon of urban social polarization like the widening gap between the poor and the rich comes into being. This phenomenon has been becoming more and more serious since the late of 1990s. It is an evident phenomenon for social stratification that is based on income gap in megapolis. Income gap has become one of the most important factors that affect social stability. Residential differentiation is becoming more and more evident since advance of market-oriented reform, enlarge of income gap, pricking up of social stratification. Intrinsic high mixed inhabitation of Chinese megapolis is gradually disappearing since 20 years profound social and economic change. During the process of commercialization on housing , families of different classes obviously differentiate in housing pattern and location through filtrating of housing price. Different class population has begun to live in different location with law. In some degree, residential location can reflect resident social and economic status. The restructuring and differentiation of urban social-spatial structure is the spatial response of megapolis social polarization, it is also feedback of social structure change in urban space. The social problems emerge just like what happened in western countries mainly due to the contemporary urban social spatial restructuring and differentiation, which make influence on the sustainable development in urban society. With the expediting of urbanization and industrialization, China will go into urban era. So it is of great theoretical and practical significance to solve urban social problems brought by urban social polarization and its spatial response, and to build up a harmonious urban society in which the development of different classes is planed as a whole in the "people first principle".Based on many tasks research fruit and study of many factors that affect urban social-spatial construction just like population, real estate, income, urban planning, this dissertation studied the urban social spatial reformation and differentiation in macroscopic (the city of Shanghai), mid-scopic (Pudong New Area) and microscopic (Sanlin Town) scale, mainly resorting to spatial analysis function of GIS and quantitative method like the index of dissimilarity. Based on the demonstration research ,it also analyzed the question about character, evolutionary trend, spatial process, dynamical mechanism, comparison between china and foreign, mostly urban social problems and countermeasure of urban social-spatial reformation and differentiation. The main points can be summed up as following.First, since the reform and opening up, a series of social and economic vicissitudes including the reform and opening up, social and economic transformation, economic globalization and China's entry into WTO, which results in the imbalance of regional development and income gap. Meanwhile, social and economic variancelike social structure classification comes into being. With the quick urbanization, megapolis is becoming conglomeration place of productive factor just like labor, capital, meanwhile, a host of adverse factors like social polarization , residential differentiation in social and economic development are highly converged in urban space.Second, from planned economy to market economy, the modern-oriented and market-oriented reform makes a radical change happens on the current urban social classes. The essential classification mechanism is turning from politics to occupation, the class construction of "two classes and one order" in planned economy is turning into the contemporary "structure of ten classes" in market economy. According to the theory of Socio-spatial dialectic ,the urban social produce and spatial produce is a dialectic ,therefore, t...
