Human beings are wiser than animals not only because they have social consciousness, but also they have the ability to improve their living conditions with the help of social consciousness. At this point, individuals and groups are the same. Thus competitions among people extend from material world to spiritual world, hence the conflicts and communications of different ideas and value notions. Ever since the classical society emerged, Ideological and Political Education has been playing an important role for the ruling classes. Essentially speaking, class nature (or the ideological nature) is the basic character of Ideological and Political Education. But the ruling classes are not always right. It is rather hard for them to avoid mistakes even when they are progressive. That's why some people have suspicious feelings about the credibility of Ideological and Political Education. It has been a long time for researchers to work hard in order to make Ideological and Political Education more scientific and improve its academic position.At present, Ideological and Political Education is facing good development opportunities as well as rigorous challenges. Together with the trend of globalization and the move of socialist market economic construction, people's productive mode and life style are changing rapidly, which have great influences on people's ideas and value notions. Different ideology trends are appearing one by one. At the same time, some western countries are busy infiltrating our ideological fields in hoping of transforming socialist China into a capitalist country. All things above shake some people's socialist belief seriously and throw obstacles in the way of our socialist construction. It is an important but difficult task for us philosophers, social researchers and educators to deal with such challenges.In this dissertation, we would like to talk about the ideology construction in contemporary China in a view of ideological function of Ideological and Political Education. We will discuss the necessities of giving ideological function into full play, analyze the process and rules, and give our suggestions to get the best results.Firstly, we will discuss the meanings and essence of the term ideological function of Ideological and Political Education. We compare the word function with several relative conceptions. We have a brief study on the meaning, characteristics and functions of the term ideology. We also try to explain the term Ideological and Political Education in the view of sociology, and argue that Ideological and Political Education is a kind of spiritual power of social integration. We will do some research workon the relationships between the two terms Ideological and Political Education and ideology, and put forward the conception ideological function of Ideological and Political Education.Secondly, we will have a brief review of the theories of classical Marxist writers, western Marxists and CPC about ideological function of Ideological and Political Education. In different times, they put forward rich theories and ideas in which have great importance to our socialist construction.Thirdly, we will talk about some practical issues such as the strengthening trend of globalization, the development of net science and technology, social divisions in China, the spreading of non-main streams ideologies and corruptions. We will discuss their positive functions and negative influences respectively.Then we will focus on the process and rules of how ideological functions of Ideological and Political Education work. This is a moving process in which we can see four parts: function-orientation section, function-behavior section, individual-function realization section and social-function realization section. There are four rules here: the positive result is related to the scientific theory;ideology is communicated with politics, economy and culture;social psychology is connected with ideology;Ideological and Political Education resources work together to get the best result. We also have some ideas about the critiques of what are the best results.At last, we try to find some ways to give the ideological functions of Ideological and Political Education into full play. According to the analyses above, we think that four strategies are very important: theory studies and innovation, the construction of CPC, public opinions guiding and curriculum resources integrity. On the field of theory research, Marxist theory with Chinese characteristic is our guide. We should make it more suitable to Chinese reality. On the field of the construction of CPC, we should do some reforms on legal systems and personnel systems, pay attention to self-cultivation and model publicizing in order to make our party more advanced. On the field of public opinions, we should put Marxist theory on the guiding position. We also should pay close attention to guide public opinions, public opinion foreseeing and educate several special social groups, in hoping of making a healthier spiritual atmosphere. On the field of curriculum resources integrity, we should make good use of hidden curriculum, quicken the curriculum reforms as well as net curriculum construction.
