Based on the domestic and foreign studies of Gramsci, and from the viewpoint of cross-discipline theory, this thesis discusses the foundation and the characteristic of Gramsci's theory, as well as its influence on the popular cultural studies, so that it can provide some theory references to the domestic study. The whole thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter I begins with Gramsci's important questions in all his life, and draws the outline of his academic development. Chapter II focuses on the main sources of his theory, for example: Marx, Lenin, Labriola and Croce, indicated that the theory of hegemony had been inosculated with the tradition of Marxism and that of Italy. Chapter III mainly analyses some key words from the theory of hegemony, including the dialectic of teacher and students, civil society, state, intellectual, war of movement and war of position. Chapter IV and chapter V discuss two category: praxis and history, to point out the relation between them and hegemony. The last chapter attempts to sum up the "Gramsci return" from three aspects: which are from the cultural elitism to semi- cultural populism, from blenching politics to caring for present, from philosophic study to cross-discipline study.
