In the process of the development of liberalism in Taiwan, China, Li Ao is an objective figure. He has learned thinking and research ways from Mr. Hu Shi, dialectical concepts of freedom and right from Mr. Zhang Foquan, experiences of running a magazine from Mr. Lei Zhen, and courage and morale of striving for the freedom of speech form Mr. Yin Haiguang as well. All the spiritual heritages left by the predecessors have nurtured him and encouraged him to become an important member in the community of Taiwan Liberalism featuring anti-dictatorship and anti-authority. In retrospect, Chinese endeavour to strive for freedom, democracy, science, and personality liberalization, and to seek national revitalization has shown the concern of the development of the cultural civilization. Li Ao is a relay with traditional and distinctive characteristics. In the times of high-pressure politics and socialist split, Li Ao pressed ahead in the direction of the pioneers. He insisted on walking out of the study and facing the society in order to strive for the real freedom of speech. He has become the most influential figure in the campaign of Taiwan liberalism. Li Ao's emergence has protested the smothery society and the rule of KMT as well, and has symbolized that the new generation of liberalists has pressed ahead in a more proactive, more skillful, and more complete way. Li Ao has depicted and glorfied the concepts of freedom and democracy from a cultural, political, and legal perspective. He has implemented the strategy of combining cultural criticism with legal and political criticism beyond the bounds of logistic and feeling. He has used the unique charm of public opinion and words, his wisdom and the rule of rational crash so as to invade the forbidden zone with prowess and engage in the practice of the freedom of speech and publishment. Li Ao's liberalism is a comprehensive and pragmatic social theory rather than a scholastic one. His thoughts has highlighted the critical element of China's liberalism and won the unique right and manner of speech. His skill of striving for freedom in particular has set a new example of speech and behavior for the followers. The experiences of running the magazine called "Wen Xing" and the debates of Chinese and westen culture witnessed Li Ao's unique andenthusiastic manner of countertradition. He has shown the new thinking way of a young generation of liberalists. In the period of running the magazine called "Qianqiu", Li Ao underminded all kinds of myths spreaded by KMT, overturned the fences erected by the rulers to restore the reality of history, and demonstrated his dauntlessness as a liberal fighter. Li Ao's liberalism also concerns the field of literature. He has provided people living in the smothery times with an outlet and housed the spirit of liberalism in a new room.Li Ao, in the manner of "I criticize, so I live." suspects and negates all values in the times of authority. He serves as a cleaner and watcher of liberalism. Li Ao reflects the independent thinking, values, and the spiritual force of an intellectual under the tradition of May 4th. He is not only an individual, but a representative of the group as well. However, thanks to the restrictions of the times , his knowledge and personality, Li Ao's liberalism doesn't mention the field of economy or pragmatic requirements of the public. In spite of Li Ao's liberalism featuring heroism and egoism, it is a valuable spiritual wealth.
