One of the significant characteristics of the United States' military presence in the Asia Pacific region is its military alliance. Australia-US alliance is an important part of the United States' Western Pacific security network. As an indispensable component for the US Asia-Pacific security strategy, it is crucial to the U.S. interests in the West Pacific region. Since the establishment of the alliance relationship, Australia participate many of the United States' military interventions in Asia Pacific area.Three cases -Korean War, Vietnam War and the Iraq war (2003) , are selected in this paper. This research will explore Australia's policy-making and its performance in the war, analysis and summarize the characteristics of Australia's "bandwagoning" policy towards the United States.The finding of this research is: Since the end of the World War II, Australia's "Bandwagoning" policy towards U.S. is changing from pursuing "security protection" to "elevate its status".Chapter 1 introduces the theoretical tools and the development of ANZUS alliance of this paper. This chapter will address the following three questions: the definition of "bandwagoning", why state adopts "bandwagoning" policy and what kind of state prefers to adopt this policy. It will also briefly summarize the development of Australia's relationship with the United States.Chapter 2, 3, 4 review the reasons of Australia government's sending troops to war, the performance of armed forces on the battlefield and the outcome of the Korean War, Vietnam War and the Iraq War respectively.Chapter 2 will focus on the Korean War. Australia committed troops to Korea in order to obtain "security protection" of the U.S. In September 1951, the ANZUS Treaty is signed, which marked the formation of the alliance. Since then, Australia could rely on the United States to ensure its national security.Chapter 3 will target at the Vietnam War. As a result of the tension with Indonisia about West Irian and the independence of Malaya, Australia send troops to Vietnam in exchange for military support of the United States. Australia followed the United States bogged down in Vietnam. After the "Nixon Doctrine" was made, the Australian Government had to adjust its policy in order to adapt to new realities.Chapter 4 is about Iraq war. Australia would like to enhance its international status and play an important role in international affairs. By participating in the Iraq war, Australia builds up closer relations with the United States. Australia has changed from the regional allies of the United States to a global strategic partner, which enhances its self-confidence when dealing with relations with others counties in the world.
