As the medium of the Western culture, English was introduced into China抯 school education and gradually developed from pure language teaching into the integrated language-and-science teaching in the Late Qing Dynasty. The school English teaching in the Late Qing Dynasty has played an important role in the cultivation of English personnel, Sino-Western academic exchanges, and history of education in modern China. This dissertation traces the historical development, explores the ideologies and practices, conducts case studies, and expounds upon the social functions and historical inspirations from the school English teaching cause in the Late Qing Dynasty. The studies of this dissertation cover the relevant fields of the studies of history, linguistics(English) and Education. As far as the research principles and approaches are concerned, this dissertation, guided by Marxist materialism, combines the relevant knowledge, theones and approaches in the studies of history, linguistics(English) and education, with the hope of conducting a cross-disciplinary study on the school English cause in the Late Qrng Dynasty.
