School education can't do without knowledge. Education comes into existence just to impart knowledge to students so as to meet the need of social continuation and development and thus make it possible for the individuals to better survive in the society. From the very day of the beginning of human society, there existed a inseparable connection between education and knowledge.However, knowledge, which is so closely related to school education and an indispensable part of school education, has been confronted with much reproach and criticism and become the target of reform of school education since modern times.Apparently, it doesn't follow that school education can do without knowledge. Even those who hold a radical critical attitude toward the problems in school education will not deny the fact that school education can't do without knowledge.Then, why does knowledge become a problem unavoidable or one which should be given priority to in the reform of school education? Why the criticism is always directed at the knowledge in school education? This first of all entails the evolution of the views on knowledge and its reflection in school education. A further consideration leads us to such questions: What form of existence of knowledge can be demonstrated in school education? How can knowledge be converted to individual life development? What value does knowledge hold to the development of individuals? How can the human spiritual energy contained in knowledge be better converted to the students' individual life development?In the historical perspective, the first chapter of this dissertation explores the evolving development of the issues of knowledge in education, and probes into the influence on the issues of knowledge in school education by the development and transformation of society, the change of the form of the existence of knowledge and the development and evolution of the views on knowledge. In different periods of social development, the confirmation of knowledge value by the society and the endowing of different value to knowledge of different forms in education affect people's views on and choice of knowledge and the arrangement of curriculum in education. The views on knowledge reflect the development and transformation of society.In present-day society, there occur great changes in views on knowledge, among which deserves the special attention of education is the fact that the views on knowledge have begun to show concern to and involve human life practice. Then, what effect does it has on the issues of knowledge in schooling? Targeted at the issues of knowledge in modern schooling, the second chapter, from the angle of pedagogy, studies the influence on the issues ofknowledge in schooling by modern social development and transformation and evolution of the views on knowledge. This chapter first of all concentrates on the relationship between three pairs of questions in the transformation of the views on knowledge: knowledge and competence; private knowledge and public knowledge; book knowledge world and life world. After this, it focuses the issues of knowledge in school education on the value of knowledge to students' individual developmentThe third chapter further elaborates the relationship between the views on knowledge, the view on the value of knowledge and the view on human development, and reflects on the current researches on the educational value of knowledge, and points out the problems facing the current school education, which go as follows: 1) People still believe that the value of knowledge in schooling lies in the mastery of specific subject knowledge itself while ignoring the value of knowledge to individual development; 2) The current researches on the value of knowledge fail to further probe what kind of value knowledge has to the students' individual spiritual life development.
