A tendency of globalization in higher education calls for an integrative participation of China's higher education institutions (HEIs) in international competitions. Meanwhile, the speed-up steps of mass tertiary education bring about intensive internal competitions among HEIs in the educational market. Other factors such as governmental assessment, folk ranking, fights for student resource, contests for market allocation of employment, and the severe scarcity of governmental investment, all require that HEIs improve their competitive strength, and especially explore the core competence for sustainable competitive advantages. By means of inference and induction, this thesis discusses theoretically and empirically an Analysis Model of HEI Core Competence (AMHEICC), ranging from the conception of HEI core competence (HEICC) to its characteristics, nature and components, hence offers a theoretical support and practical basis for its evaluation, early warning, and upgrade. This thesis is divided into 8 chapters in 3 parts. The first part is composed of 3 chapters for a theoretical description of HEICC in terms of the research rationale and purpose, theoretical background, competitive agents and connotation analysis. The research rationale covers some concrete aspects of the present conditions of the research on HEICC, the research logic of the thesis, its basic structure, and research methodology. The theoretical background consists of a systematic demonstration of AMHEICC, including its theoretical basis (core competence theory, strategic administration theory, learning organization, etc). The purpose of this research is to seek for the advantages of HEICC via studying the competitive agents and the competitive environment. Based on an analysis on the conception, characteristics and nature of HEICC, this thesis summarizes that HEICC means "strength", and knowledge is its essential characteristics. Learnability is both the nature of HEICC and its external representation. The second part involves investigation and analysis, from chapter 4 to 6. By investigations and statistic analyses, the thesis tests and proves the rationality and scientificness of the components in AMHEICC, establishes the criteria for identifying HEICC, analyses the overt elements (academic productivity and talent productivity) and covert elements (essential connotations of administrative competence and cultural competence), and builds a general model for HEICC analysis after a systematic construction and empirical study via resorting to the identifying-vagueness principle and statistic investigation. The third part, chapter 7 and 8, is the upgrading and systematic summarizing of the thesis. It demonstrates the visualized assessment of HEICC, its strategic early warning and upgrading. In addition, this part summarizes the main conclusions of the thesis as well as its creativity and implications.
