The new reform of compulsory education has brought about an overall view of the corresponding coursebooks in our country. Understanding history is essential for the understanding of the future, therefore, an overall view of the advantages and disadvantages in the system of our coursebooks in the past is prior to the originality in it. What a road have we taken since the foundation of China? What have we gained and what have we lost? What are the reasons for them? What is the current state of coursebooks? How should we evaluate it? What kind of value should our coursebooks hold? Thoughts to the above questions form the basis of this dissertation.The comprehensiveness of the problem leads to the combination of various research methods. This dissertation reaches this goal by applying the method of historical documents to retrospect the development of the coursebooks of our basic education; applying the method of comparative study to understand the development of coursebooks within the horizon of the world; using case study and the analysis of the system to grasp the venation of and the successes and failures in the development of coursebooks deeply from the macro and micro aspects. And the direction of reforming the system of our coursebooks is analyzed. Guided by these ideas, several basic phases have been divided in the system development of our coursebooks through an examination of the system of our coursbooks from the foundation of China historically. An analysis of the characteristics of each phase has been given further. Through the investigation of the reform trend and operation mechanism of the system of our current compulsory coursbooks, this thesis analyzes the main problems and their reasons. A comparison with the system of compulsory coursbooks in the developed countries such as America, the British, and Japan and so on reveals their advantages and disadvantages. This is expected to furnish us with some thoughts to perfect our own system. The main purpose to do researches in the above three aspects is to provide practice for the construction of our compulsory coursebooks system. On this basis, the characteristics of compulsory coursebooks, theories of system function and selection have been discussed from the aspect of the nature of compulsory education. It clarifies the framework and value selection of the system of compulsory education. In the end, according to the current condition of our country, some primary proposals about how to perfect the system of our coursebooks in compulsory education have been put forward.The system of compulsory coursebooks is a combination of systems of compiling, censoring, publishing, choosing and supplying. And the reform of our system of compulsory education's coursebooks has to start from many aspects: carrying out a free compiling system to improve the compiling quality; improving the compiling and censoring system of coursebooks, actualizing the separation of compiling and censoring; cracking down the monopoly in publishing and selling, introducing the marketing mechanism; improving the selection system, enlarging the rights of schools, teachers and students; setting up the free-provision system appropriate for our country.This dissertation tries to clarify the nature and composition of the system of compulsory education's coursebooks, and to pack up the history of the development of it in our country in order to find out the problems in our system of compulsory education's coursebooks and determine the basic direction of the reform. It is also expected to provide some primary thoughts on the perfection of the system of compulsory education's coursebooks by doing these researches. The proposals and thoughts put forward upon the development of our country's coursebooks are still to be tested. They are also the goals the author will make endeavors to attain in the future.
