With the development of higher education during 50 years after 1949 in China,the general higher education institutions have made great progress,compared with the initial quantity in 1949,the number has increased by nearly 10 times,the new development has brought new opportunities,the classification and positioning of Chinese general higher institutions to achieve better development and meet with competition and challenges is an important problem.As a famous higher education experts said,classification of higher education institutions is a worldwide difficult problem.The classification of higher education institutions based on the perspective of the capability of the knowledge activity is discussed.Defined the concept of classification of general higher education institutions,introduce the classification of Chinese higher education institutions and that of the world's major developed countries.Based on the study of the classification of domestic and foreign higher education institutions,proposed the problems and challenges on the classification of Chinese general higher education and further pointed out the theoretical and practical significance of classification of general higher education institution as well as the characteristics of this kind of classification compared with the other classification.Analyzed the meaning and type of knowledge,the composition and characteristics of knowledge of higher education institutions,the functions of higher education institutions on knowledge-based era,explained on the theory of knowledge activity system,which are the theory of classification of higher education institutions based on.the capability of knowledge activity.Proposed the index of the classification of general higher education institutions based on the capability of knowledge activity,the principle of index system,the reason of the choice of the indicator,utilized the empirical study on the 77 general higher education institutions in Liaoning Province.Based on the discipline structure,to make the detailed classification about result of the classification of higher education institutions based on the capability of knowledge activity, including the formula of the wide-size of discipline,the balance of discipline and the comprehensiveness of discipline,and the analysis on the composition of the discipline sructure on general higher education institutions,utilized the empirical study on the classification of the knowledge-creative orientied general higher education institutions,the knowledge-spread orientied general higher education institutions and the knowledge-applied orientied general higher education institutions in Liaoning Province based on the discipline structure.
