The purpose of this study is to investigate the approaches of becoming qualified music teachers in Taiwan, and the difficulties they are facing such as the employment opportunities, inservice education, and the transformation of music curricula. Through historical study and individual interviews, it helps us to analyze and realize the characters of music teachers of Chinese communities in general. I discussed the findings and offered suggestions at the end. This study starts from the history of Taiwanese music, including the cultivation process of music teachers and the introduction of famous music educationalists. Both music training curriculum and teaching methodology are important in producing good music teachers. I also discussed in this study the job opportunities in Taiwan of those graduated with a teaching certificate and those without.According to the current education system, a person who wants to take music as the profession may apply for the music department of a 4year university. After graduation, if he or she would like to be a music teacher in an elementary or a middle high school, he/she has to earn the necessary credits from a qualified education institute, receive a proper practical training, and pass the qualification exam provided by Taiwan's Department of Education. On the other hand, those who are not qualified to teach music at schools may apply for a teaching job at private music centers or do individual afterschool tutoring. Several international music centers in Taiwan offer certificates of various instruments to those who pass the qualification exams. The ongoing training for music teachers is important not only in improving teaching technique and instrument skill, but also in providing the updated knowledge, and in developing a successful career. It is found through literature study and personal interviews that many senior and successful music teachers take advantages of ongoing training or shortterm workshops to promote their own teaching skill.Currently three problems are noticed regarding music teachers in Taiwan: First, teacher training system changed significantly in recent years, which generates huge supply in teachers; Second, the oversupply of music teachers disturbs the job market, and many teachers have difficulty finding a teaching job even with a teaching license; Third, new curricula require music teachers to provide"art and humanities"related courses, instead of their music profession only. Many, especially those who were trained by the old system, may not be competent for such a transition. The comparison of Soochow University and Tainan University of Technology shows the difference in training music teachers. It helps especially for those who are not familiar with Taiwan's education system to understand the fundamental variations of these two systems.
