The current rapid economic development in China is facing shortage of resources, environmental pollution and other major conflicts. Whether it can be from simple production and processing mode to sustainable product service system mode, is the major issue related to the competitiveness and future development of China's manufacturing industry. Product service system (PSS) is an innovative strategy. It takes business focus from product design and marketing materials into designing and marketing system combined by products and services to meet customers'needs. Therefore, PSS to enterprise in the profits, than the traditional sales model, is more consistent with sustainable development goals.To improve the deficiencies of the existing PSS studies, this study, which is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation and the Scientific and Technological Projects of Zhejiang Province, clearly introduces value flow into the study of enterprise product service system (EPSS) with the method of metaphors from life science research. It includes the value flow theory and method of EPSS, and takes EPSS of the industrial steam turbine enterprise for the application.The first chapter describes the background of PSS, and reviews the state-of-art of PSS theories, value chain/flow/web, supply chain structure and its evolution, and business study with metaphor from life science research. Based on this review, it puts forward the need of value flow on the study of EPSS, and the need of the corresponding method of metaphor. Then it points out the problems to be solved and the significance of this study. Finally, the content and the overall architecture of this study are put forward.In chapter 2, the life cycle issues of enterprise sustainable development are discussed; the web contents of EPSS are analyzed; the principles that EPSS management need to follow are generalized; the types and characteristics of PSS based on web view are specified; then the concept of EPSS and the generalized concept of PSS are defined. Based on the similarity of structure and function between PSS related supply & demand network and ecological community, the metaphor foundation of PSS and its related supply & demand network are studied. Separately from the symbiotic unit, the symbiotic unit quality parameter and the symbiotic mode, the foundation of the EPSS symbiotic metaphor is studied. Finally, it presents the architecture of EPSS value flow theory and method based on metaphor method.In chapter 3, based on the excavation of the monetary value laws similar with the energy laws, it conceives the monetary value pyramid structure of supply & demand network. The evolution of PSS, enterprise and supply & demand network and their interaction within the unified framework (the monetary value pyramid structure), can help collaborating human society with nature for sustainable development. Based on the monetary value laws, the universal monetary value flow models within supply view and demand view is respectively constructed by the metaphor of the universal energy flow model. Based on the universal monetary value flow models, combined with the supply & demand network structure and its evolution characteristics, it puts forward a strategic performance measurement system and a value flow management model of EPSS in supply & demand network environment.In chapter 4, the state variables of EPSS endosymbiotic units are ascertained, such as the monetary value corresponding to the system scale structure and the storing monetary value for commercial breeding. Then the scale of the structure complexity metrics and the corresponding value and cost of PSS are analyzed. Based on these variables, it constructs the endosymbiotic unit model and the endosymbiotic structure model of EPSS. Then it presents the relationship and evolution characteristics of EPSS endosymbiosis based on these models.In chapter 5, firstly, it constructs the ectosymbiotic unit model and extosymbiotic structure model of PSS. Based on these models, it respectively constructs the ectosymbiotic structure model of traditional trading patterns, the ectosymbiotic structure model of management fee based PSS trading patterns, the ectosymbiotic structure model of leasing based PSS trading patterns, and the ectosymbiotic structure model of share saving PSS trading patterns. Then, their ectosymbiotic relationship and evolution characteristics are deeply analyzed respectively.In chapter 6, the characteristics of PSS design are analyzed firstly; then it presents the basic principles and strategies of EPSS design. After the design view of PSS is illustrated, it presents the design process of EPSS and the modeling process of PSS based on the value flow theories. And the modeling elements and modeling methods in the modeling process of PSS are illustrated combination with a PSS case of an industrial steam turbine enterprise.In chapter 7, the value flow theory and method of EPSS are applied to an industrial steam turbine enterprise. The application of both endosymbiosis and ectosymbiosis theories and methods of EPSS are verified, as well as the application of the integration of endosymbiosis and ectosymbiosis theories and methods. It is to guide the case enterprise how to develop and deepen the strategies and operations of EPSS.In the final chapter, all achievements and innovations of this study are summarized, and the future research direction is put forward.
