In a knowledge economy era, the source of economic growth and the focus of competition among enterprises have transferred from material capital to knowledge capital. Knowledge workers in an enterprise play an increasingly important role. However, there isn't much research on their performance management, and current ideas and method of performance management can't be applied directly to the management of knowledge workers. Therefore, it is necessary to study systematically the performance and management of knowledge workers in an enterprise.This dissertation has done a full and complete research on the performance management of knowledge workers according to systematic point of view and with the method which combines theoretical analysis and positive analysis.Different from traditional workers, knowledge workers are those who are engaged in production, creation, knowledge expansion and application and bring about added-value of knowledge capital for an enterprise. He may or may not belong to the enterprise but works for it. He has his own distinctive characteristics: a keen desire to self-realization, unique personality, a mixture of requirement, outstanding creative ability, eagerness to renew his knowledge, difficult control of his working process and direct measurement and evaluation of his working result, more frequent shift in work, etc. Of course, there is certain change in the nature and organization form of his work. For instance, knowledge becomes a tool owned and carried by knowledge workers; their work is more unique and flexible; the result of their tasks is less definite; the requirement for their knowledge and skill is more demanding. And the enterprise organization form begins to change to an organic one. So the working principles of knowledge workers, which require them to have efficacy beyond their working performance, remain cooperative besides their own abilities and keep up knowledge accumulation in the accomplishment of their tasks, are different from those of traditional workers.Also, the performance defining of knowledge workers has its own specific characteristics. Traditionally, there are three categories of performance viewpoints based respectively on result, ability and behavior. Although the three definitions each have their own advantages, they have certain drawbacks and are not suitable for the performance management of knowledge workers.
