Metropolitan Region (MR) is the region most valuable to research. It is no doubt the most important dement in both economic and spirit scopes. As the ultimate spatial form of human economy and society development, MR affects the circumambience area so deeply that the effect exceeds the extension of region, country and even the global extension. This effect becomes more evidence during the globalization age. The Tokyo Metropolitan Region (TMR) is right one of the crucial MR around the world, and affects not only the East Asia but also the globe economy. It is an amazing achievement for the economic development upon the jam area, so it can be a model of intensivism usage of land. So it is significative to discuss the development of the TMR and compare it with MRs in China and other famous MRs in the world to get useful conclusions.The preface is the introduction of the paper which is mainly about the basis and significance of the topic chose, the main contents and measures of the study.First chapter is the sum up of urban spatial theories involved and is the theories base of the paper. The discussion upon urban spatial from the scope of Urban Geography, Urban Planning, Urban Economics and the foundation and outcome of theories modal are introduced and summed up.Second chapter is the main point of the paper. Firstly, it discusses the population increase and movement of the TMR and other two MR of Japan from the scope of population. Secondly, from different point of view, it studies the industry shift and development of the JMR deeply and in detail. At last, it probes into the development of the JMR from the point of view of industrial structure. For the development of Tokyo from a small town to a modernized Metropolitan Region, nowadays ,Tokyo still contains the characteristic of natural environment obviously. What is particular in this chapter are the points below: first, it reviews the changes of regional structure of the TMR in the point of commuters, the relationship between price of land and structure of the city. And what's more, it studies the shift of the third industry which is centralized in the MR. It also analysis and classify the changes of population distribution and every branches of the third industry to observe the development of the JMR.Third chapter is international compare of MRs around the world. In this chapter, it chooses three important MRs, which are New York MR in the USA, London MR in the British and Paris MR in the France and summarizes the structure of industries and region.Forth chapter compendiary description of the Chinese MRs' spatial structure system in the delta region of Chang-jiang River, the delta region of Zhu-jiang River and the Capital MR, in order to compare with other MRs in the world.Fifth chapter summarizes the discipline of the development of MRs in the world, in order to find something be used for reference to the development of MRs in China, such as the discipline of evolvement of industrial structure, discipline of aggregation, diffusion and transference of industries to spatial structure and the discipline of population distribution and movement may be useful to the MRs' development in China.Fifth chapter is the conclusion of the paper. It summarizes the whole content of the paper ,expatiates the main innovations and the shortages , what's more, some questions are still maintain to be involved in the further research.
