| Since the 1990s, international expansion of banks, sometimes called"third wave", has happened all over the world. Obviously, Emerging Market Economies (EMEs) has been the main destination of banks expansion. At the same time, foreign banks participation in Emerging Market Economies (EMEs) of ASEAN, adjacent to China, also rose substantially. Recently, foreign banks'market share in EMEs of ASEAN has increased significantly and they play a great role in the financial sector of host country. This dissertation reviews the development of foreign banks in EMEs of ASEAN, analyzes the motivation and the policies of EMEs of ASEAN, and also discusses the impacts of foreign banks participation. It may be helpful to analyze the motivation, the impacts of foreign banks participation in China and to make suitable policies.This dissertation is structured as follows. Chapter 1 reviews the domestic and abroad lectures concerning foreign banks participation in EMEs. Chapter 2 introduces some theories of multinational banks, and discusses the rationality of theories for interpreting foreign banks participation in EMEs. Chapter 3 discusses the development of foreign banks participation in EMEs. Chapter 4 describes the development of foreign banks participation in EMEs of ASEAN. Chapter 5 and chapter 6 analyze the motivation of foreign banks entry EMEs of ASEAN, and the policies of host countries. Chapter 7 discusses the impacts of foreign banks participation in EMEs of ASEAN. Chapter 8 is a brief introduction of foreign banks participation in China. Finally, the conclusions are drawn.For the first time, this dissertation, taking EMEs of ASEAN as study object, analyzes the motivation of foreign banks participation, the policies of host countries and the impacts of foreign banks participation. The research in explaining foreign banks participation in EMEs is comparatively few. This dissertation may enrich the lectures concerning the participation of foreign bank in developing countries especially EMEs.
