With the complex of urbanization, globalization, informationalization, marketization, decentralization, and agglomerationization, urban agglomerations in China - for the internal, they are organisms of regional space-evolution and ties-strengthening; for the external, they are a core unit of global economic convergence and player in global competitions - with their dual roles has attracted lots of attention. However, the contradiction between gradually rising planning practices of urban agglomeration and the lagging theory of urban agglomeration hinders us from advancing forward. The research focuses the core issue of "how to characterize and measure the features of the spatial structure of urban agglomerations' development and their energy efficiency", sets the progressive aim framework of "to record some kind of changes, to seek some kind of interpretations, and to build a bridge", and takes the approach of "research topic selection - theoretical review - analytical approach design - case study (with description of the phenomenon and the analysis of the mechanism) - theory construction". Based on reviewing dynamics of worldwide research on methods and theories of urban agglomeration, also supported by latest theory and technology of -spatial analysis, the author advances the analytical framework on the evolution of economic space of urban agglomerations - by selecting the identification indicators such spatial trend surface, spatial core, energy efficiency of the structure, and etc., that characterizes the macro-form, equalizing trajectory, and the collective energy efficiency of urban agglomerations, creates an integrated framework and method on the recognition and evaluation of the space of urban agglomerations. In the Chapter of Empirical Research, the author chooses three urban agglomerations in China, which are Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region as study cases, in the year sessions of 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, uses advanced data analysis software such as GIS, Surfer, DEA and etc., to approach in the three aspects which are economic space, macro-form pattern, spatial core, collective energy efficiency measurement of urban agglomeration. Based on plenty of full and accurate data that allows profound analysis, and amount of information of space-time evolution, we thus obtain the character and rule of the three urban agglomerations in China. In the Chapter of Conclusion, base on the preamble findings in the research of the space of urban agglomerations, and from the "subject" perspective, the author introduces the theory on division of labor and specialization of modern economics, to reveal the forming of productive division networks in urban agglomeration through the flow diagram of division and exchange. And then by introducing the game theory, the author has revealed the forming of competition and cooperation through the process of game networks forming. In the process of integrating both that aims at continuously polarizing and assembling from one to more cities, the author intends to explore a thought for explaining the evolution of urban agglomeration. Finally, the author carries on the summary of research process, methods and findings, and puts forward the problems and directions requiring further studies.
