With the increasingly intensified competition in the emerging global economy and the development of information technology, manufacturing and retail firms are turning to outsource their logistics activities to third-party logistics providers(TPLP) that specialize in logistics processes, in order to reduce costs, improve service quality and concentrate on core capabilities. But the risks associated with outsourcing have been the principal limitation on the growth of logistics outsourcing. Therefore, this dissertation discusses the system structures, inner mechanisms and control strategies of logistics outsourcing risks from the systemic perspective. The main contents could be summarized as follows:(1) From systemic perspective, the analysis framework and flow of logistics outsourcing risks are proposed. Risk factors, risk outcomes and risk types are studied according to the characteristics of logistics outsourcing risks by using systems thinking method, and risk factors are specially analyzed from two aspects - exterior environment and interior system. Based on this, four types of risk outcomes are concluded, and the logistics outsourcing risks are divided into four types accordingly.(2) A system dynamics model of logistics outsourcing risks is constructed. Firstly, the system construction has been built, including risk factor subsystem, risk subsystem, control strategy subsystem and performance subsystem. Secondly, the relationships among these subsystems are illuminated in a total new way with system theory, and a causal figure of logistics outsourcing risks is thus attained. Lastly, a system dynamics model of risks associated with logistics outsourcing is constructed. The behavior of the system under study is analyzed through a simulation model based on the principles of the system dynamics methodology.(3) A real option model on the controlling of logistics outsourcing cost risks is established. According to the characteristics of cost risk in logistics outsourcing and application steps of real options, the dissertation designs a real option framework and identifies corresponding types of real options of controlling logistics outsourcing risks. The real option model is proposed by considering four uncertainty factors of logistics outsourcing cost. Finally, a case study of the model is reported to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.(4) A screening model and a quality risk controlling model are proposed by applying principle agent theory. In the screening model, a set of contracts are provided for the logistics providers to make a choice, which are designed based on the revelation principle of game theory and emphasizing on the mechanism designing of outsourcing enterprises under the information symmetry and information asymmetry situations. In the quality risk controlling model, revenue functions of the third-party logistics providers and the outsourcing enterprises are established respectively. Risk controlling strategies of outsourcing enterprises are analyzed under different conditions, and optimal incentive coefficient and optimal monitor level are determined.
