A Study On The International Competitiveness Of China's Paper-Making Industry

With the development of economic globalization, industry competition has increasingly become the focus of international competition. Promoting the international competitiveness of related industry has received the consent of all the countries over the world, exploring the international competitiveness of industry will be of great significance. The focus of this dissertation is to study the current international competitiveness of the paper-making industry in China. In an attempt to establish an analysis framework with regard to the international competitiveness of China's paper-making industry, based on the results of previous research about international competitiveness and an overview of the current development of paper-making industry in China, an overall analysis and evaluation was made about the current international competitiveness of China's paper-making industry.As the start of the research, this dissertation makes comments on international competitiveness and its basis of theory, economic connotation of industry's international competitiveness and competitive strategy and theory of competitive advantages. Then it evaluates Michael.E.Porter's theory of competitive advantages and sorts out previous research results aiming at forming mechanism of the industry and its competition.Before the analysis aiming at international competitiveness of Paper-making industry in china, the features of Paper-making industry are stated. In addition, an overview of the research about competitiveness at home and abroad as well as the research about the competitiveness of China's Paper-making are made. With the globalization of international Paper-making market, the new developmental trends of international Paper-making appear, forestry-paper integration, cleaning production, economies of scale, products functioning, distribution globalizing, and resources intensifying. China's Paper-making industry has developed quickly for a few years. The production and consumption of the paper products has kept at the same growth rate as the GDP of our country .The proportion of the industry added-value in national economy is rising year by year. The rising scale of industry added-value is apparently bigger than that of our country's GDP. Our country has been the big country in production and consumption of paper products. The problems that China's Paper-making has to be confronted are pointed out.When industry structure of China's Paper-making is analyzed, five factors that have influence on industry competition are stated. Through analyzing potential newcomers, we can find out that Paper-making industry is with a high fund-density threshold, which will keep other industries' funds from floating into to some extent. Through analyzing advantages and disadvantages of major Paper-making industry areas in our country, we can declare they own golden development chances because these advantages are so impressive. Compared with advanced level in the world, our country's paper-making is far behind that, because of unreasonable industry structure and undeveloped economies of scale. International competitiveness index system of China's Paper-making is analyzed before index showed with number about industry's competitiveness is cited in the way of analyzing with facts. The analysis shows that Chinese Paper-making industry has an increasing international market share while its export still remains low compared with strong power. The analysis aiming at competitiveness index of trade shows that there is no advantage in our country's trade competition .Through analyzing comparative advantage index and revealed competitive advantage index ,we can find out there are no these advantages in some part of our country's Paper-making products.When factors influencing international competitiveness of China's Paper-making industry are analyzed, developmental environment of Paper-making is stated. The analysis aiming at factor endowment of Paper-making industry in our country shows that as our country's forest resources are not rich and usable forest resources are not enough, Paper-making industry's development is largely limited. In the view of industry's strategy, support given to Paper-making industry by the government has directly promoted Paper-making industry's development in our country. The survey of daily paper usage in some cities shows that the sales of daily paper in our country have been largely affected by entrepreneurs" pattern of operation, development level of economy and people's habit of consumption. In order to further study relevant factors influencing our country's Paper-making industry, In order to further study relevant factors influencing our country's Paper-making industry, this disquisition creatively give a quantitative analysis in influence of international competition through a Gray-related method, which opens another door for similar research ever since.The higher degree of centralization is, the more apparent advantage of economies of scale is, the bigger effect is, the stronger competitiveness is. There are some other factors including environment, fund density, and entrepreneurs' scale, among which the environment has direct influence on our country's Paper-making industry.Finally, based on the conclusions above, three suggestions for improving international competitiveness of Paper-making industry in our country are brought forward. Firstly, the government should establish an effective managing frame by setting down and implementation of industry's development strategy as well as relevant policy. Secondly, every producer of the industry should set a long-term and clear strategic aim, focus on cultivating talent, encourage innovation of technology and improve enterprises' economies of scale and obtain competitive advantages by reforming and acquisition. Thirdly, the whole industry should solve the conflict among development, resources and environment radically by developing circular economy.
