Deng Xiao-ping thought of business management is an indispensable part of Deng Xiao-ping theory. It is a system of his thoughts, tenets, principles and methods concerning business management and it occupies an important position in the history of business management in contemporary China. It is of great significance to make a study of his thought of business management and to enrich and develop Marxist theory of economic management with the theory of socialist enterprise management with Chinese characteristics. Deng Xiao-ping thought of business management is the summary of the theories of China's socialist business management practice. It is the guiding ideology of enterprise management innovation in contemporary China. It is of great practical significance to make a study of his thought of business management and promote the reform and innovation of Chinese enterprise management.The dissertation investigates the formation and the spiritual essence of Deng Xiao-ping thought of business management by using Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought as the guide, applying the principles of new institutional economics, management and socialist reform, adopting the methods of text analysis, empirical analysis, comparative analysis, historical and logical analysis. The dissertation is divided into seven chapters. Chapter One is an introduction in which the author puts forward the research background, summarizes the status quo of relevant research both at home and abroad, and determines the approaches and methods of this research. Chapter Two is on the formation and features of Deng Xiao-ping thought of business management. The author analyses its theoretical foundation, investigates its process of formation, and summarizes its main features. Chapter Three is about the improvement of enterprise environment and people-oriented business management. The author makes a research into Deng Xiao-ping's theories on people-oriented business management, such as standardization of order management, people-oriented concept, harmonious environment and high-quality business culture. Chapter Four is on the restructuring of enterprises and multi-system enterprise management. The author analyzes the formation and problems of New China's unitary pattern of public enterprises, elaborates on the background and significance of the initiation of Deng Xiaoping thought of multi-system enterprise management, and empirically investigates the correlation between multi-system enterprise structure and economic growth. Chapter Five is about enterprise restructuring and market-oriented enterprise management. The author reviews the process of market-oriented management reform of state-owned enterprises, summarizes Deng Xiaoping's ideas of market-oriented enterprise management reform, and its guidance to market-oriented management reform of state-owned enterprises. Chapter Six is on the technical transformation and creative management of enterprises. The author probes into the fundamental ideas of Deng's establishment of learning enterprise and self-innovation of enterprises, and the new measures of self-innovation of innovative enterprises. Chapter Seven gives a conclusion, looks forward to the future and makes a summary of the dissertation.The main research and the originalities of the dissertation are as follows:First, the author studies the process of formation and development of Deng Xiaoping thought on business management, and sums up the main features of Deng Xiaoping thought on business management. In accordance with the consistency of history and logic, following the route of China's 60-year business management practice, the author explores the process of the initiation, formation, initial maturity, system perfection, enrichment and development of Deng Xiaoping thought on business management. On this basis, the author grasps China's 60-year business management practice, especially the interactive relationship between the reform and opening up and Deng Xiaoping thought on business management, and discloses the strategic, open and practical features of Deng Xiaoping thought on business management.Second, the author studies the spiritual essence of Deng Xiao-ping thought of business management. The dissertation argues that the spiritual essence of Deng Xiao-ping thought of business management is that Deng Xiaoping accurately grasps the global trend of economic development, faces the world, looks forward to the future, and combines macro-strategy to administer state affairs with micro-business management with systematic consideration on the specific conditions in different historical periods of China. In response to the problems in China's business management, he makes a correct assessment of the situation, makes an overall design of enterprise reform and management and promotes it with great efforts. The inherent logic of Deng Xiaoping thought of business management is that we should begin with reestablishment of the enterprise order, people-oriented business management, with the carrying out of multi-system enterprise management and market-oriented business management as the focus, and finally come down to business technology management and innovation management. Enterprise reform and business management promote each other, forming the thought on business management of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Third, the author conducts an empirical analysis of the spiritual essence of Deng Xiaoping thought of business management. Shortly after the "Cultural Revolution", in order to satisfy the demands of all neglected tasks in all walks of life to be undertaken and things to be brought to order, Deng Xiaoping demands we standardize business management and achieve the improvement in enterprise quality management on standardized business management with standardized business order as the means to an end, with humanistic concept as the orientation, with harmonious environment as the setting and with quality guarantee as the objective, and Deng Xiaoping raises scientific management to people-oriented business management. At the early stage of the reform and opening up, in order to get rid of the drawbacks of the unitary pattern of public enterprises, Deng Xiaoping requires public enterprises being the main parts, the establishment of multi-competition and vigorous enterprise ecology by permanently involving such non-public businesses as private enterprises, joint ventures and joint-stock companies. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, facing the great changes of the international situation and China's underling problems in reforms, Deng Xiaoping suggests improving the efficiency of enterprises, the ability of competition through the functional position of three elements of the market economy—enterprises, market and government. With the further expansion of opening up, problems, such as the relative backwardness of business techniques and lack of self-innovation become more obvious. Deng Xiaoping insists on striving for the creative development of enterprises, and establishing the principal status of enterprises in the state innovation system so as to make our country's enterprises occupy an impregnable position in international competitions by introducing technology from abroad, technical innovation and reform, innovation and construction of enterprises successively. Deng Xiaoping thought of business management provides the guidance for the transformation from disorderly management to people-oriented management, from the single public system to multi-system enterprise management, from enterprise management in planned economy to the new management adaptable to market competition, and from the manufacturing enterprise management to the innovative enterprise management in our country.
