Since entering the industrialized society, human beings has made tremendous achievements in economic development, however, with the development of economic globalization, industrial expansion and urbanization have caused great waste of resources and heavily destruction of the earth's environment, and costly environmental price has been paid for economic growth. Continually grabbing of resources and unduly polluting of the environment not only impairs the capacity of global sustainable development, but also poses a threat to the survival of mankind as a whole. Since reform and opening up, China's economy has experienced rapid growth in the past 30 years, while in the process, constraints of resources and environment on economic growth has become increasingly prominent role. China's rapid economic growth, to a large extent, consumed too much resources and energy. Such a traditional development pattern has caused great deterioration of natural ecology. In order to achieve sustainable economic development, it has become a top priority of scientific development to protect the environment and to change economic growth pattern from the high resource consumption, high pollution, high-growth to low resource consumption, low pollution, high growth. As far as we know, the relevant studies are still staying in the analysis of the simple correlation between environmental pollution and economic growth. So, it is of great theoretical and practical significance to further study the relationship between environmental pollution and sustainable economic development and to explore the mutual influence between the two relevant channels, thereby to provide consultative policy recommendations to promote transformation of China's economic growth pattern and to enhance the control of environmental pollution. The dissertation aims to explore the inter-relationship between environmental pollution and sustainable development of Chinese economy and the effects of endogenous mechanisms, quantitatively analyze the potential impact of various channels in the role of the relationship, and make policy recommendations of China's sustainable economic development and environmental pollution control. Through the literature review of relevant domestic and foreign studies, the dissertation trims theories of environmental economics, economic growth and sustainable development, and summarizes ideas of the theoretical study and research methodologies. On this basis, the dissertation tries to investigate the relationship among environmental pollution, economic growth and sustainable development. Two different are developed economic growth models under the framework of new classical economic growth model and endogenous growth model to study the intrinsic relationship among environmental pollution, human capital and economic growth, while study possible influences of different variables on sustainable development in the balance of economic growth path. Further the author integrates pollution control to the framework of endogenous growth, which focuses on analyzing the relationship among environmental pollution, pollution control and sustainable growth in the process of achieving economic growth, and examines the necessary conditions for achieving sustainable development. On this basis, simultaneous equation models are established to do an empirical test of the Chinese data.Further, the dissertation also discusses the impact of the different channels on the relationship between environmental pollution and sustainable development, and interaction of different channels. In order to more accurately describe and simulate the complex feedback mechanisms between environmental and sustainable development, decomposition methods and simultaneous equation models are used to empirically analyze industrial structure, urban economy, and foreign direct investment respectively. An improved logarithmic mean Divisia index method is applied to analyze the channel of industrial structure. Through the application of this method to the analysis of China's four major industrial pollutants, we find that the scale effect (that is, economic growth) is to increase the impact of industrial pollution, while technical effect is the main force to reduce pollution, the impact of industrial structure channel(namely, structural effect) increase, to some extent, China's industrial pollution. Detailed analysis also shows that, there is a big difference in technology effect and structural effect among the different industries.Taking into account the environmental pollution control investments and the impact of industrial structure, the dissertation analyzes channel of the urban economy. Through the use of simultaneous equation estimation, the environment and the per capita income data of China's 278 cities for the period 2003-2007 is empirical analyzed. The results showed that the inverted U-hypothesis of environmental Kuznets curve seems existed in Chinese cities, but completely different mechanisms may exist among different pollutant emissions and economic growth. The results also showed that the industrial structure of the environmental impact of industrial structure may be more complex, simply adjusting the structure of the first, second and third industry can not obviously reduce environmental pollution, and therefore we need to focus on impact of the structure of sub-industries on the environmental pollution. The results of environmental pollution abatement investment show that the reduction effect of pollution abatement investment for industrial wastewater and industrial SO2 emission is very significant. However, the current scale of pollution abatement investment is not enough to curb the environmental pollution brought by urban economic development. We should increase investment in environmental pollution control in order to effectively reduce the emissions of a variety of environmental pollutants.Further the dissertation also considers the conditions of open economy, i.e. how the foreign direct investment influences sustainable development and environmental pollution. The results emphasize the significance of an open economy, especially the foreign direct investment, for sustainable development. However, through the impact on economic growth, industrial structure and environmental pollution control, the ultimate effect of foreign direct investment is not conducive to China's industrial pollution control and environmental conditions improving, and there is "pollution haven" as well, therefore we should guide foreign direct investment reasonably and pay attention to its environmental standards and technical quality.
