Housing consumption is one important factor of consumption contents, which is the embodiment of farmers'wealth and social position. Housing plays an important role on rural social groups'consuming structure and social resource system. Now China has entered a rapid period of industrialization and urbanization. The quantity of farmland for construction is increasing and per capita quantity of cultivated land is decreasing. China is promoting rural cultural construction vigorously now. Therefore, it is very important to carry out the research on farmers'housing consumption as far as improving farmers' housing consumption level, residential environment and reasonable using land resource are concerned.Based on foreign and domestic relevant research results, taking Jiangxia district of Wuhan and Yangxin county of Huangshi, Hubei province as study area, this paper studies on farmers'housing consumption by questionnaire surveys, statistics materials and methods of multivariate statistical analysis and contrast analysis. The conclusions are as follows:1. The main room is the main part of a farmer's house. There are regional discrepancies in the main room area. The area of the farmer's main room and the per-capita area of it shows a positive correlation with local social economic development standard. Now the quality of farmers'housing is poor, the housing structures are mainly brick concrete and half timber, and the houses with adobe construction still exist. The infrastructure of countryside is still weak. There are regional discrepancies in the quality of rural housing, but the discrepancies are not too obvious. Farmers are more inclined to develop new house sites to build houses and the decentralization tendency of rural housing is very obvious. Of course there are regional discrepancies in the decentralization of rural housing. Compared with economic underdeveloped regions, the space intensification of rural housing in economically developed regions is much higher. As a result, the intensification degree of rural residential land use is higher.2. The area and quality of farmers'housing displays an increasing and promoting tendency and the housing location shows a decentralization tendency. Now more and more farmers in economically developed regions prefer to build houses on their original house sites.3. At present, since farmers decide their housing consumption according to their families'off-farm income level, family size, rural consumption habits and concepts, the influence of land policy on farmers'housing area is rather limited. The regional discrepancies of the factors that influence the current situation of farmers'housing area consumption is not obvious. That is, farmers'housing area consumption in economic underdeveloped regions is more influenced by the rural traditional consumption customs and thought. The rational level of farmers'housing area consumption is higher in the economic developed regions.Compared with the economic developed regions, farmers'expectation to the increasing ratio of housing area is relatively high in the economic underdeveloped regions. In the future, the discrepancy of housing area will be narrowed among farmers in the economic developed regions whereas the discrepancy of housing area in the economic developed regions will be enlarged. The lamination appearance of housing area consumption will be more obvious. Traditional concepts will have vital influence on farmers'future housing area consumption and the irrationality of farmers'future housing area consumption will be still prominent. The contribution of farmers'future off-farm income to their family income is great and the off-farm income level is still an important factor that affects farmers'future housing area consumption. It will reflect certain Matthew effect. Policy factors will produce great negative influence on farmers'future housing area consumption. The regional discrepancies of the factors that influence farmers'housing area consumption intention are not obvious. Compared with the economic developed regions, farmers'future housing area consumption in the economic underdeveloped regions is more affected by traditional concepts. Their desire to improve housing conditions is greater, which shows more irrationality.4. With the rapid development of urbanization, farmers'off-farm income has become their main source of family income, which will enable them to have more funds to improve their housing quality. With the development of economic and society, farmers' consuming concept has changed. However, traditional rural consuming concept still exists currently and group psychology plays an important role in housing quality consumption. Generally speaking, farmers determine on housing quality consumption according to their family income, traditional consumption customs, and their housing need. At present the regional discrepancies of the factors that influence farmers'housing quality consumption is not obvious. The farmers expect improved the current housing quality much more. From regional view, farmers'desire to improve housing quality is stronger in the economic underdeveloped regions than the the economic development regions, and regional discrepancies of farmers'future housing quality will be narrowed. The traditional rural consuming concept, farmers'off-farm income and family size will have great influence on their future housing quality consumption. The regional discrepancies of the factors that influence farmers'housing quality consumption intention are not obvious. Compared with the economic developed regions, farmers'future housing quality consumption in the economic underdeveloped regions is more affected by traditional concepts, which shows more irrationality.5. Farmers'off-farm income is the main factor that supports housing location select. Whether farmers build their houses on the original house sites or not is more affected by other farmers'option of building houses. It shows obvious irrationality too. Whether the original house sites have adequate spaces to build houses is an important factor that influences farmers'housing location select. Households and their age have slight influence on farmers'housing location select. From regional view, the factors that influence the farmers'housing location select are almost the same, but the influence degrees is different. Generally speaking, more farmers prefer to move to center villages. Overall, farmers of economically developed areas have greater tendency to move to center villages than those from economically underdeveloped areas. The more farmers'off-farm income is, the greater their tendency to move to center villages will be. The older the householder is, the more reluctant to move to the center villages they will be. Farmers'willingness to move to center villages is more affected by other farmers'option of building houses and traditional consuming concepts. There are certain discrepancies in the factors that influence farmers' willingness to move to center villages. In the economically underdeveloped areas whether farmers are willing to move to center villages or not is more influenced by traditional consuming concepts and other farmers'housing building behaviors, which shows obvious irrationality. In addition, farmers there know little about the government's policy on constructing new rural, which leads to the result that policy factors haven't produced any influence with statistical significance on farmers'option of building houses.
