Environmental issues arising from coal waste piles with spontaneous combustion can’t beignored and it should be comprehensively managed. Buring inhibition by covers and compaction isa commonly used measure to control spontaneous combustion. Due to lacking the specific theorytest and parameter research, the result in governance is not ideal. Based on the analysis of theprinciple about buring inhibition by covers and compaction, the parameters of buring inhibition bycovers and compaction have been carried on the detailed experimental study in this paper. Thisstudy concretely analysed the various factors that influence the effect of buring inhibition by coversand compaction, combined the construction site and conditions of coal waste piles withspontaneous combustion. The covering thickness and bulk density after compaction of soil withdifferent soil water contents have been researched to meet the requirements of buring inhibition. The suggestion of choose cover material according to different water content has been proposedafter the comparison of air isolation effectiveness and the amount of soil between two materials. The protective measures have been proposed based on the test and analysis about changes of airisolation effectiveness in isolation layer with time. This study provided the foundation ofparameters for the covers and compaction and quality control in comprehensive treatment of coalwaste piles with spontaneous combustion, and had the important practical significance for thegovernance of ecological environment in mining area.
