Recently, water disaster has become an increasing threat to safety circumstance in non-coal mines with the increase of mining depth. In this paper, a water-proof refuge station was proposed for Guilaizhuang gold mine in Shandong province with requirements on impermeability and bearing capacity. System constitution of the water-proof refuge station was presented according to the practical situation under mine, and technical measures to maintain air pressure balance and survival environment under water were considered. Focusing on the external protective system of the water-proof refuge station, two main parts, waterproof concrete structure and air curtain, were studied and discussed as follows:Firstly, through series tests of mechanical property, resistance of concrete to chloride penetration, and acoustic emission (AE) characteristic, influencing laws of admixtures, high temperature damage, and stress damage on waterproof concrete sample were investigated. Using ABAQUS software, stress field, seepage field, distribution of damage plastic factor, as well as post-disaster protective performance of the bulkhead and lining structure under 150m water pressure were simulated. On the basis, design principle and maintenance method were put forward accordingly.Then, on the basis of application condition in underground mine, criteria of reliability, stability, and sealing efficiency were presented for air curtain system of refuge station. For the optimizing purpose, a series of full-sized simulated chamber model experiments were performed to evaluate the sealing efficiency of different ACD configurations and the influence of interruption on ACD performance due to the transit of refugees. CFD model was established to further analyze influencing laws. An optimized, double-sided, baffle-equipped ACD supplied with compressed air was proposed then.In the end, on-site construction requirements and details of the water-proof refuge station were summarized. Hydrostatic test of water-proof door, positive pressure maintenance test, and air permeability performance test indicated that the refuge station behaving good positive pressure maintenance, air-tight property, and water-proof performance.This study, which has widely reference value in the application, has further improved water-proof refuge station for non-coal mines, and provides scientific basis and important consults for relevant standards.
