Study On Theories And Methodology Of Compact-City Transportation Planning

With the rapid development of social economic, the process of urbanization andmotorization continued to be advanced, which bring about serious problems such as trafficcongestion, traffic safety and traffic pollution. This result in a seriously negative influence inurban economic-development and operating-efficiency, causing much inconvenience topeople’s work and life. Transportation has become a major bottleneck which restricting thedevelopment of the modern city. The traditional Planning principle which focus on transportsupply and target on motorization, cannot solve the increasingly serious urban transportproblems, but also unable to adapt to the travel requirements of residents’ growing highefficiency and high accessibility. Therefore, it is necessity and urgency to make changes intransportation planning theory and method. Based on the analysis of main contradiction ofurban transportation, This Paper points out that the compact city transportation planningtheory and method helps to solve the current problems and be able to cope with thechallenges in the future.The paper presents that the theory and method of compact city traffic planning is basedon the core concept of compact city and in-depth analysis of the interrelationship betweentransport and land use. From the aspect of urban space, traffic demand and traffic network,this paper take advantage of theoretical analysis, empirical research and optimizationmethods to find a solution to the problem of overall theory and method.Firstly, the concept, core content and practice application of compact city are expoundedin detail. Compact city is identified as the space strategy of our cities to achieve sustainabledevelopment. Secondly, based on the reanalysis of the theory and method of traditional citytraffic planning, as well as the further discussion of traffic characteristics and content of thecompact city, this paper build the framework and process of compact city traffic planningtheory. based on the analysis of interactive relation between urban transportation and urbanspatial evolution, this paper put forward the multi-center space development mode and publictransport-oriented mode of compact city, and clear that the TOD is the right mode to promotethe city space and public transportation coordinated development. Thirdly, combined with the characteristics of compact city, introducing the mixed land use rate and traffic accessibility,this paper improved the traffic demand forecast model and established the transportationnetwork layout optimization method based on TOD.Finally, this paper established a system ofevaluation index to assess the compact-city traffic system, and to identify the degree of trafficsystem sustainable development. Taking Xi’an city as an example, this paper analyses thefeasibility of planning method.
