With the rapid growth of urbanization, the rate of city in China has risen from19%to50%from the year1980to2011. But in this process, cities with their uniqueness in culture and space are being deprived of their original flavor, which is especially obvious in China. So how to transfer the focus of Chinese urban construction from quantity to quality and how to incorporate the urban spatial features into the multiple targets of urban construction has become a pressing problem to be solved in the urbanization process.Every urban space evolves from its peculiar natural landscapes, historical and cultural relics, and socio-economic condition. Every urban culture, as a concrete manifestation of its feature and character, is the product of long-term accumulation in economy, politics, nature and climate condition, As a result, urban construction and development must center on its culture building. Urban culture is the soul and core of city life. It helps to promote city’s integral image and citizens’whole quality. It plays an important role in coordinating development of economy and society, as well as city’s sustainable development. Of the prime importance for current urban culture building is how to dig its culture innovation, reasonably exploit its culture resources, set up reasonable and effective mechanism of urban culture building and display its character and charm.As an important part of urban culture, public arts can be integrated into urban environment and space by means of urban planning and architecture design resulting in the building of a city’s integral image. With regional culture characteristics, the history and tradition of the city can thus be well preserved. However, with the development of modern science and technology, more and more social division of labor and fragmented of various profession more obvious, resulting the construction of urban public space loss of the overall coordination and cooperation, affecting the quality of city public space and city’s integral image, resulting in public art of city with its background environment no harmonious and the resources waste. From the perspective of urban culture, together with the analysis of the evolution of domestic and foreign public arts, this essay demonstrates the relationship between public arts and urban culture. The aim of the essay is to help create quality urban public space with its unique regional characteristics. Without doubt, a public space with open and active image has great attraction to external resources. Its power and potential can also radiate to its vast neighboring area. As a result, it will greatly promote the development of the whole city and social economy.The essay is made up of seven chapters.Chapter One mainly reveals the development and the present situation of public art at home and abroad. Some relevant concepts and the aim of this essay are also discussed.Chapter Two systemically analyzes and summarizes the relationship between public art and urban culture.Chapter Three formulates the theoretic framework of holistic design of the public art from system environment theory, sustainable development theory, and introduction to human settlements.Chapter Four dwells on the level analysis of the holistic design of public art such as urban planning, architecture design, urban landscapes, the color of urban environment.Chapter Five explores ways of integrating system planning of public art into urban planning.Chapter Six focuses on the practice of public art in Wuhan, for example, expounding the holistic design of public art to improve the urban environment of public place and promote integral image of city.Chapter Seven makes a summary of the essay and puts forward some suggestions about the development of public art in future.
