Research On The Architectural Practice And Characteristics Of Lingnan Architect Lin Keming

An architect’s individual study is important entry point of make the modern architecturalhistory research theoretical and systematic. Architect is the crowd that can play the largestsubjective dynamic role of architectural history. Their individual creation is the most vividpart of the architectural development. The research of practice and ideas of Lingnan architectswill contribute to the accumulation of historical data and improve the existing content, lay thefoundation for the future establishment of a comprehensive theoretical study, and willcontribute to contemporary development of the Lingnan architectural creation.Lin Keming is the representative of Lingnan modern architects. He did a ground-breakingwork in Lingnan architectural profession, and his works almost important public buildings,had distinctive style and far-reaching impact. He was the first people who introducedmodernist architectural practice in Lingnan, and created a precedent for professionalarchitectural education. He also studied urban planning, played an important role in themodern development of the Lingnan Architecture.In the existing research the paper as the background to the Chinese social and culturalconditions and the characteristics of building development in20th century, through theexcavation and combing of architectural practice course of Lin Keming, analysis of the designcharacteristics of the typical works, than explore and study the architectural style and thinkingstrategies of Lin Keming overall, in order to clear his historical value and practicalsignificance of the architectural creation.Chapter Ⅰ is the introduction part, it describes the condition and deficiencies of the existingacademic research and the purpose of the topics. The same time, it resolve some basicconcepts such as research time, space, scope and style, than gives an explanation for theresearch objectives, innovation, content, methodology and framework.Chapter Ⅱ is background overview, it introduces the overall development of the Lingnanconstruction industry and architect’s practice status in the20th century, including the culturalinfluences by the early Western-style buildings before1900, the social and historicalbackground of two different historical periods of Lingnan architectural development (beforeand after the liberation) and the related influencing factors. Chapter Ⅲ and chapter IV is the data compilation and study of course, respectively for thetwo stages in Lin Keming’s experience--before the liberation (1926-1949) and after thefounding of New China (1949-1986). The author carries out a detailed combing with theintroduction of building creative and social activities, than summarizes his mining career andcreations by historical excavation.Chapter Ⅴ is the research for the method, mainly analysis of Lin Keming’s architecturaldesign techniques and creative tendencies. By several means such as photography, datacollection and mapping to the existing buildings or Buildings with complete information,summarizes the design features of the plan and fa ade, and quantitatively analysis the designtechniques of Lin Keming in two periods.Chapter Ⅵ explores the process and characteristics of the Lin Keming’s architectural creationfrom the urban point. The close relationship between the design and urban development ofGuangzhou is a unique position in the architectural research of Lin Keming. In the other hand,through the study of development of Guangzhou, could find the influence by the practice ofLin Keming, and reveal the special effect and historical limitations of him.Chapter Ⅶ is the study of thought. By the interpretation and analysis of the architecturalconcept of Lin Keming and combining with the evolution of political and culturalbackgrounds, explores the basis, feature, value and impact factors behind his academic ideas.At the same time, through a comparative study with other contemporary architects, clear thehistorical positioning and academic significance of the architectural thinking of Lin Keming.Finally the conclusion summarizes the historical value, the design techniques, the creativefeatures and the ideological connotations of Lin Keming’s architectural practice, and exploresits inspiration and reference for contemporary architectural education and creation.
