In the increasing trend of economic globalization and international communication, the images of industrial products have been used to reflect and represent the national image. The second largest economic power though, China bears a bad reputation for having produced cheap and phony counterfeits, which tremendously hurts the image of Chinese enterprises and that of the nation. Therefore, it has become a necessity for Chinese enterprises to elevate their image by raising design quality, obtaining worldwide recognition.This thesis aims to effectively evaluate and ensure the quality of product design that conveys the right image. On the basis of researches made by predecessors, it applies innovatively the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to the study of industrial product design. Having surveyed and interviewed many experts, it analyses the hierarchical relations among various elements that may affect the quality of product design, establishing an evaluation system of industrial product design. Methods of mathematical analysis and statistics are thoroughly used to quantify the weight value of impact factors in all levels of indexes, and key words are used to express emotional tendencies (like semantic differential method or SD method, etc.). Diagrams are made presenting the evaluation standards for three levels of influence factors, based on the gradient developed in accordance with Kansei Technology and intention scales. The weight value and the quantification of evaluation standards are two essential innovations in the thesis. It has been proved in the research that the evaluation system is effective and the methods are practical, manageable and quantifiable.In practice, the evaluation system is utilized to assess the image quality of a lawn mower by analyzing problematic issues the machine currently has, identifying the breakthrough point for modification and establishing various modification plans. Afterwards, those plans are assessed again in the hope that they can be optimized so as to promote decision-making process. As is been proved, the system and methods are workable and practical in effectively evaluate and ensure the image of product design.The thesis also works on the product development procedure together with relevant methods and technology driven and dominated by product image design, producing a Product Color Analytical System (Software 1.0) which serves to ensure the quality of product image design.
