Recent years, a rapid construction period of China’s university campus passed, and renewal and sustainable developmt of the campuses would be the next important task for China’s universities in the future. To study the Dynamic Renewal Campus Master Plan of modern US universities comprehensively now, would provide important reference for the China universities development in the future.Since 1960~1970s, the US campus planning changed from the traditional, ambitious, unified master plan to a dynamic, framework design. The dynamic renewal master plan model requires institutions make a framework design on architecture, circulation, landscape, open space and utilities etc.(instead of a unified design blueprint), correlate with the exact future time and population development, which means that the campus planning documents need to be updated at a specified time interval when the campus existing situation and university strategic plan changed. This research on the Dynamic Master Planning of Contemporary University Campus Development of the USA is conducted in the following three parts. The 1st part(the 1st-3rd chapter) introduced the concept and characteristic of Dynamic Master Planning of Contemporary University Campus Development of the USA, discussed the 5 kinds of the Mordern US university campus planning management, and reviewed the evolution of campus planning and design methods of the US Universities. The 2nd part(the 4th-7th chapters) is the core of the research, in which the 4 phases of making a campus master plan of a mordern US university are studied.Chapter 4 described planning method and analysed a detailed case study of the first phase, Surveyand Analysis of Existing Conditions.Chapter 5 discussed the principle of accurately forecasting the campus future space needs, and explained the work process and research methods of the second phase, Programming the Development Plan, by example study of campus master plan ducuments.Chapter 6 summarized the specific planning and design and control method of the campus master plan design methods through the detailed case analysis and research of the Campus Master Plan of Mordern US Universities, which is for the third phase Design in Planning. In Chapter 7, through the detailed and in-depth case study of capital projects construction process of two public university(University of Michigan and University of California at Berkeley), the specific role of the campus planning document during the campus development period emerges. This chaper is for the forth phase, the Implementation of the Campus Master Plan. The 3rd part(the 8th chapter) summarized the 4 phases of dynamic renewal campus plan process of the mordern US universities, pointed out reference points of the US campus master plan organization, planning and design methods, control strategies and implementation ways, which would be useful for university campus development of China in the future. This research is based on translation of nearly 100 copies Campus Master Plan documents from 30 American Universities, reading of more than 50 American university campus planning and related books, field research of more than 20 American College Campuses, interview of more than 20 American university campus planners, managers, researchers, and questionnaire of 100 people on the organization and management of American university campus master plan. Based on these analysis, the author rised the concept of Dynamic Renewal University Campus Master Plan of Morddern US, and illustrated design methods and implementation of the 4 phase of campus master plan process, which would reference for the Chinese universities campuses development in the future.
