Objective: To investigate the changes in serum levels of ghrelin, tumornecrosis factor-α and interleukin-6in Children with Congenital HeartDisease (CHD) at pre and post percutaneous closure of the defects.Method&Materials: We measured the serum levels of gherlin, tumornecrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) by enzyme linkedimmunosorbent assays (ELISA) in67patients with CHD and in20controlsubjects; and compared these markers of inflammatory reaction betweengroups of pre-closure (37patients) and at the end of5minutes (37patients),1month (22patients) and3month (8patients) post percutaneous closure ofthe defects. Results: Our results showed that the patients with CHD had significantlyhigher serum level of Ghrelin, TNF-α and IL-6in comparison of thecontrols but gradually return towards the baseline levels at the end of3months after closure of the defects. Conclusion: The inflammatory reaction is activated in pre-closure andself-limited post-closure in children with CHD. Percutaneous closure couldimprove the inflammatory process, which is safe and effective in childrenwith CHD.
