Hu Peihui (1782-1849), called "Mr Zhucun", whose word is "Zaiping","Zhucun""Zimeng", is a famous Li scholar from Jixi county, Anhui province during the middle and late Qing Dynasty. He was born in the Jin Zi Hu Shi, a prosperous family which has passed on the classics from generation to generation and especially paid attention to the ritual study. His family occupied the very important status in the classic study history of the Qing Dynasty. Hu Peihui was deeply influenced by his family study in childhood, and learned from his grandfather and uncle-grandfather. In his twenty years old, he mastered the main contents of many classics. After grown-up, he visited several scholars and got significant benefit. He was also good at making friends who are the learned Confucian scholars, which also increased his scholarship greatly. Just because of the family study, good teachers and friends and so on, Hu Peihui possessed the condition to compose his new work of Yili.Hu Peihui lived in a Classics" summary age when scholars had written a variety of forms Classics books. Moreover, when Qing Dynasty academy developed to Jiaqing and Daoguang period, the condition of composing the new works of Yili had been already mature. In the common role of objective and subjective factors, Hu Pei-hui had begun to study Yili from Jiaqing thirteenth year (1808). His earliest goal was only to study Sangfu, therefore the study of this chapter showed his skill especially. After studying the Sangfu, Hu Peihui t sprouts the idea o study Shijing. When he arrives in the national capital, Hu Peihui finds the scholars who study Shijing are numerous, so he plans to study Yili again. Later, when he checks the Yili Shiguan of his grandfather, makes up his mind to study the all chapters of Yili, so does he in the Jiaqing nineteen year (1814). Hu composed Ceremony and Ritual for41years, until death still has5chapters12volumes not been finished which included Shi Hunli and so on. Later, his nephew Hu Zhaoxin and disciple Yang Dayu added, collated and performed the lack chapters of the original manuscript, thus completed Ceremony and Ritual40volumes bright work and finished Hu Peihui’s wish, provided a classic research work that has high academic value and is quite esteemed by the later scholars and regarded as one of the9kinds of12famous new works that is the pride of the scholars of Qing Dynasty. Hu Peihui verified Yili text in a full range when he studied it. Hu Peihui advocated that Yili is written by Zhou Gong, and he thought’the content of Yili is subtle and detailed. As for Zhuan and Ji of Yili, he thought that is written by the disciples of Confucius. He also thinks Yili is the classics of Sanli. Regarding the chapters’order of Yili, Hu Pei-hui followed the order of Liu Xiang’s Bie Lu, which accorded with the order of Zheng Xuan’s "Contents of Three Ritual". Hu Peihui verified the constructions and meanings of the every chapter of Yili. Hu Peihui proposed his own views about some basic questions, the basic concepts as well as some different opinions of Yili, thus had formed the unique views of Yili, which is one of the important contents in this book. The views of Yili in Ceremony and Ritual formed the unique study idea of Hu Peihui and the overall grasp about Yili, which represented the unique explanation angle of Yili and the study idea of Hu Peihui.Ceremony and Ritual attached importance to collate the character of Yili and Zheng Zhu. In this book, the method of collation is diverse and the content is full. The actual content involves to collate the character of Yili, Zheng Xuan’s Yili Note, Jia Gongyan’s Yili Explication, Ruan Yuan’s Collating Notes on "the Thirteen Classics, Annotated and Explicated" and so on. In the process of collation, Hu Peihui complied with the opinion of "rather detailed, not simple, with the Zheng family discipline","recording the differences and similarities of each edition of Yili and Zheng Zhu in detail", and selected the Tang Confucian classics carved on stone and Yan Ben for the collation edition of Yili and Zheng Zhu separately, simultaneously selected the numerous rare books for the reference books of collation, specially he took the Xu Ben for regard as the reference book and led to the collation of this book finer than other books. In addition, in the collation process, Ceremony and Ritual also often points out and clarifies the mixed problem between Classics and Note, and makes a great effort to collate the text of Yili. Although this book is not a monograph of Yili collation, when we compare this book and Ruan Yuan and Sun Yirang’s Collating Notes on"the Thirteen Classics, Annotated and Explicated" from the angle of collation of characters of Yili and Zheng Zhu, we can find the collation of this book is more finer than others too. So Ceremony and Ritual occupies the important academic status in collation in the Qing Dynasty.Ceremony and Ritual has a prominent achievement in the classic research aspect. Ceremony and Ritual is skilled in the exegesis. In the exegetics practice, Hu either explained words directly, either cited broadly from many sources, or creatively used some exegetics tongues and ways, which made the exegetics style of this book different and the exegetics" contents plentiful. This book has great achievement in the examination of characters, the explanation of word meanings and so on. Ceremony and Ritual is detailed on examination of the ritual system and name and decorum and customs. Hu Peihui was good at distinguishing the ritual system and name, and his examination and test are careful and precise, realistic and subtle. He could spread out others opinion broadly and form his personal opinion. Moreover, Hu Peihui often explained the ancient classics by the ancient system. So this book has numerous new views and has solved many problems in the research process.Hu Peihui abided by Zheng Zhu and he established four rules, which are to make up for the notes, express the notes, attach the notes and revise the notes, in order to explain characters of Yili and Zheng Zhu regularly and which are elaborated according with Zheng Zhu. Specially he used the rule of the revising the notes, which breaks through the prejudice of the explanation can not violate the note, highlights the realistic characteristic of explaining the classic. He often explained both characters of Yili and Zheng Zhu and the Zheng Zlut’s contents were explained more than the contents of characters of Yili. He was good at seeking widely the ancient notes, searching the numerous sayings, often writing down himself commentaries and making his conclusions, which formed his personal opinion. He divided the chapters of Yili into some paragraphs that rest on Zhu Xi’s Yili Jingzhuan Tongjie and Zhang Erqi’s Yili Zheng Zhu Judou and so on, and generalized the paragraph’s meanings. So he made some important breakthroughs, and facilitated people’s reading and the research.Hu Peihui wrote Ceremony and Ritual and cited339books which include classics, history, Zhuzi, anthology and so on. The citation of Ceremony and Ritual is of unique characteristics. From the citation of Ceremony and Ritual, we can see that the characteristic of Hu Peihui is skilled in classics, history, Zhuzi, anthology and so on. From this, we can see Ceremony and Ritual broadly uses the method of applying the classic to testify the classic. In addition, it also establishes the method of applying the history matters to testify the classic, applying the books of Zhuzi to testify the classic and so on, which leads the explanation to be evident and original. Ceremony and Ritual can distinguish the success or failure and make up the lost or error of Jia Gongyan’s Yili Explication, the precise and extensive explanation of this book exceeds Jia Gongyan’s Yili Explicatio too. So this book wins universal eulogizes of later Confucian.Ceremony and Ritual also reflects the ritual thought of Hu Pei Hui. Although Hu Peihui is a typical Confucian of ancient character, he put together Gu Wen and Jin Wen and the words of Gu Wen and Jin Wen character. In the process of study, Hu Peihui stressed the sinology, but did not give up song study. That is one method of adopting both modern and ancient character. In addition, Ceremony and Ritual also highlights Hu Peihui’s sense of statecraft.Ceremony and Ritual has its unique academic characteristic. This book has many original and creative theories when Hu Peihui examined and corrected the bedroom temple and ritual system. This book has received the universal recognition of the Confucians in the same time and it is a comprehensive expression of the Yili research. It has represented the highest achievement of the Yili research in ancient times.
