Yili been engaged in social service work in American Chinatown for a long time.In the process of work,Yili came into contact with a large number of lower-class immigrants and witnessed their hardships.Out of concero and sympatihy for this group of "grassroots" people,Yili presented their daily life landscape in the fomn of novels and revealed various problems existing in Chinatown.Yili is keenly aware of the racial and class issues that exist in and around Chinatown.On the purpose of highlighting the narrowing,Poverty and oppression of the "grassroots" class in Chinatown between the 1970s and the 1990s,her novels focus on the living space,Chinese restaurants and Chinese factories in Chinatown,and she uses the outer space of Chinatown as a comparison,so as to reveal the segregation and class differentiation under the spatial division.Also,Yili pays special attention to the living conditions of lower-class women in the cramped space of Chinatown.They not only suffer from the oppression of patriarchal system in Chinese families,but also have to face the fate of being squeezed,exploited and even expelled in the workplace.The injury of female body and even the collapse of spirit are the strong representation of this fate,which shows the distinct female consciousness in Yili.Yili's Chinatown writing reflects her conscious and strong sense of caring about"grassroots" class.With cool and detached observer attitude derived from daily life material,with the documentary telling the story,she reveals a real Chinatown of 1970-1990,especially to the underlying the fate of women writing,enriched the connotation of "grassroots" literature.
