The dissertation focuses on placing Kazuo Ishiguro, the famous contemporary Japanese English writer in the process of globalization, post-modern cultural background and in the postcolonial context, to examine the functioning of power mode of his writing. This dissertation uses the power theory of Foucault and Bourdieu as the theoretical reference. This dissertation tries to approach the object of research from four aspects:power-space mode, power-discourse mode, power-physical mode and the resistance to the nexus of power. The first chapter analyzes the functioning of power-space mode in Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels. This functioning of power are rendered as a space level distribution of the English countryside, the internal segment of the space of old Shanghai and the UK/Japanese with the competition of urban space center and the periphery. Space that not only the power field, but one of the necessary elements which is more involved in the production of relations of production. At the same time, by the space allocation principles and discipline system, modern society has become a "Panopticon".The second chapter analyzes the functioning of power-discourse mode in Kazuo Ishiguro’s writing. There is a general power characteristics in discourse. This chapter begins generally interpretation and construction of the "truth game" is not impartial, then specifically explores the imagine interpretation of white myth of the empire, and the enlightenment and domination strategy of the "honor" discourse, pointing out that the grand truth discourse is full of power quality. Further, this chapter analyzes the strategies of control through construction of the official language, competition of "the autonomous principle" and "the heteronomous principle" in the art field, the information trade-offs and issues set of media field. Discourse is no longer as an objective nature, we thought that it carries and the production of power, and power through the discourse achieve its objectives in secret ways. The third chapter analyzes the functioning of power-physical mode in Kazuo Ishiguro’s writing. Body is the direct and the most important disciplinary object. It’s forged by power, subjected to the hidden power. This chapter explores the body training are at work in surveillance of the physical body and the standardization of social and cultural body. The ultimate goal of this power mode is to allow the body to be useful, effective and obedient. And this discipline is operated with the legal, hidden ways throughout the society as a whole, in order to achieve the purpose of the society controlling. The forth chapter surveys Kazuo Ishiguro’s resistance strategies to power, that’s his counter-discourse literature practice. Power and resistance go hand in hand, can not be separated. As a writer, Kazuo Ishiguro in addition to watch the functioning of power in the cold eyes, he also deconstructs the text of power discourse, which is the means he selects. Kazuo Ishiguro’s counter-discourse literature practices in his works point directly to the central discourse and its process of product and reproduce: Self-explores and self-question of the traditional Western narrative modes and literary standards, challenges the cultural authority of the west; By revealing fracture and fragmentation of the history, the subjectivity of history and ideology connotation, deconstructs the traditional linear historical view of progress from the central authority, even shows the oppression and deprivation from modern social system which is as a power system to individual. Although Kazuo Ishiguro’s counter-discourse practices haven’t as much the smell of the gunpowder as the writing of the native writers, they weakens the central power discourse of the Europe from the depth of the discourse. So they have significant value to cultural resistance of the marginalized, non-mainstream alternative and minority cultural groups.
