On The Study Of Chinese Predicate-object Verbs In A Typological Perspective

In this paper, we take the Chinese predicate-object verbs as research object. On thebasis of the thorough exploration on the Chinese predicate-object verbs and theobjects of these verbs, through the compairson with other languages, we try to findout the common features and individual characteirstics of the Chinese predicate-objectverbs. Meanwhile, we can deepen the study of the Chinese predicate-object verbs.Firstly, under the guidance of the categoirzation theory of cognitive linguistics andon the basis of retrospeoting the typological studies oil the predicate-object verbs, wefind out the common features and individual characteirstics of the predicate-objectverbs. The common features are the three constructional types of predicate-objects:verb phrase，non-full clause, full clause. The individual characteirstics are that thepredicate-object verbs of the same type in different languages can own different typesof predicate-objects.Secondly, according to the structural property of predicate-objects, this paperdivides Chinese predicate-object verbs into five types: predicate-object verbs onlycarrying verbal objects, predicate-object verbs only carrying concurrent objects,predicate-object verbs only earirng clauses, predicate-object verbs carrying verbalobjects and concurrent objects, predicate-object verbs carrying verbal objects andclausal objects.Thirdly, from the aspect of compairng English, Korean and Chinese, the commonfeatures and individual characteirstics of the predicate-objects are discussed.Meanwhile the phenominona about predicate-object verbs only carrying the objects inthe form of questions and the positive and negative of the so-called predicate-objectverbs are also discussed in the paper.Though the compairson with previous studies, the creative points in this paper are:(l)Three constructional types of predicate-objects are put forward explicitly: verbphrase, non-full clause and full clause;(2)As for the predicate-object verbs onlycarrying verbal objects，their objects can be divided into three types according thedegree of referentiating: concrete event referentiating, generic event referentiating,and reifying event referentiating;(3) The predicate-object verbs only carryingconcurrent objects can be divided into two types according the origin of theconstructional meaning: protypical concurrent-object verbs and non-protypicalconcurrent-object verbs;(4)The essence of the predicate-object verbs is the issue oflinkage about two So As.
