Predicate-object structure,a basic structure type in modern Chinese, can be found incompound words, phrases and sentences.Separable words, whose main structure type ispredicate-object,are important research subjects in Modern Chinese Language.Thedissertation adopts the method of combining microscopic study with macroscopic study.Webelieve that studying the separating property of predicate-object structures could help usunderstand and solve the problems of Separable words. The dissertation is made up of5chapters which can be separated into3parts.As thefirst part,chapter1include two parts, one is an overview of studies about differentpredicate-object structures.the other is a general introduction to our research. The secondpart is from chapter2and chapter3.In chapter2,it is proved that all kind of predicate-objectstructures possess separating property to a certain extent. The following chapter investigatethe separated forms of predicate-object structure systematically. On this basis, we find somecommon rules and also differences between individuals.Chapter4is a preliminarydiscussion on the mechanism of predicate-object structures’ separating. There are three mainconclusions:1.There are two preconditions for the separating of predicate-objectstructures.One is that in modern Chinese,Predicate-object structure is a common structurestyle in all language units and morpheme could turn into a self-sufficient word under someconditions;the other is that Predicate-object structure is flexible in being a word or a phraseand could meet the requirement of reporting events.2,The cause of separating ofpredicate-object structures is the speaker’s demand for communicating functions, whichcould be interpreted from two perspectives. On one hand, event reporting requires that predicate-object structures be separated; On the other hand, that predicate-object structuresbe separated is required by the common demand of Cooperative principle and Principle ofleast effort.3,The differences between predicate-object structures’ separating mainly resultfrom semantics and pragmatics.Chapter5which summarizes our research is the last part ofthis dissertation.
