Shanghai has been the commercial and trade center of China in recent hundredyears. With the rapid development of the city the Shanghai history researchbecame a remarkable doctrine. As a typical city of immigrants, settlers from otherprovinces constitute the main part of Shanghai’s population, their amount accountsfor nearly80%of the latter. Therefore the research of immigrants and thedevelopment of Shanghai city attracts constant attention. The case studies of someimmigrant groups in Shanghai have been fruitful, which reflected in many publishedmonographs on Ningbo immigrants, North Jiangsu immigrants, Fujian immigrantsand Guangdong immigrants. As is known to us all, the relation between immigrantgroups and the development of Shanghai city varies according to the complexity ofthe development of Shanghai city and the unique geological characteristics ofdifferent immigrant groups. Consequently, the case study is necessary, too. This dissertation takes Huizhou immigrants in Shanghai as study object, systematically and comprehensively sorts out the process, scale of migration fromHuizhou to Shanghai since Dynasties Ming and Qing till the early years of the P.R.China, analyses the organizational form, operating activities, social interaction ofHuizhou immigrants in Shanghai, and sums up their identity and relationship withhometown.Based on the above-mentioned, we can find that the process of Huizhouimmigrants accommodating and integrating oneself to Shanghai aboriginalcommunity is also the process of the transmission of Huizhou culture. Huizhouculture is an integral part of Shanghai urban culture. Huizhou immigrants, on onehand, disseminated Huizhou culture, on the other hand, underwent cultural changesand gradually engaged with Shanghai urban culture. Likewise, in the service ofhometown they spread Shanghai urban culture across their native land, whichgreatly impacted on Huizhou culture. In this way positive interaction between thetwo regions looped. Since the foundation of the People’s Republic the migration toShanghai ceased. In1953Huizhou Association withered away, and after that the cultural interaction between Huizhou and Shanghai immensely weakened. Ingeneral, the author drew the following conclusion: Immigrant groups in the cityassume the role of “cultural intermediaries” in the cultural interactions betweenregions. They not only provide important sources for the urban culture, but alsoensure the development and vicissitudes of their hometown.
