Study On Ceramic Pillow

Pillow is important daily living equipment, has coupled with humanbeing through thousand years. There is no definite conclusions about the origin of pillow. However, It’s acknowledged that the oldest pillow appeared in the stage of early homo sapiens, about 120000 to 30000 years ago of ice age. In China, pillows were used from very early times and were documented in an Eastern Jin period literature, "Shi Yi Ji" (拾遗记) indicating that pillows were used by kings since the Shang period (1,500 B.C.).Ceramic pillows are the products of improving production and living conditions, they contained the technology creations and life wisdoms. The process of production, execution, use and disposal considerations have reflect the changes in the development of the materials, but also in the concept of the social concept and spritical culturals. This doctoral dissertation concentrated on the study of ceramic pillows from Tang Dynasty to Yuan Dynasty.Chapter one sorted out the past achievements about ancient ceramic pillows research in and outside China. And then, introduces main content, study ways and means, methods in the dissertation.Chapter two and chapter three form a time and space frame of ceramic pillows in ancient times. In these chapters, archaeological typology method is adopted to compare and classify substantial unearthed artifacts. With the form of time and space frame, we can know the ensemble material culture of old times. With the form of time and space frame, we can be aware of the changing process and source and course of the ceramic pillows, thus we can make division and find pseudo for the newly unearthed ceramic pillows or the ceramic pillows handed down from ancient times.In chapter four, the analysis and summary of the ceramic pillow’s production, use process help us know better of the life of ancient people. The study of the ceramic pillow’s shape, design patterns, inscriptions, functions and the trade conditions helps us know the role of ceramic pillow in ancient societies.Chapter five is a study of values of the ceramic pillows in ancient society. The paper discusses the reason of ceramic pillows step down from the stage of history, but popular as the object of the academic research. The article adopt document data to explore the art, the technology and the social value of ceramic pillows. On the basis of above discussions, the paper interprets the relationship between the collections, the preservations and the utilization of cultural relics. Further more, the thesis offer proposals to improve these relationships.
